U.S.: Pretty much nobody likes this insensitive 9/11 WWF ad

Disturbing 9/11 WWF ad treatment
  • Um, holy crap. What can we say about this image besides the obvious fact that it’s completely uncalled for? Comparing a natural disaster to terrorism is probably not a good idea, no matter the context. (The World Wildlife Fund is not happy with the Brazillian ad company that came up with this, BTW.) source

I get the campaign, and it’s actually rather well done as far as public awareness ads go. It’s shocking. (Unfortunately yes, this will offend people and can be viewed as insensitive.) But the massive shock factor is why it’s effective… people will see the image and this will lead to them looking into the image more, where they will get the message that, even more so than terrorism, we need to be prepared and attempting to prevent natural disasters, which have enormous tolls as well. My major criticism of the ad is that they do not enforce the informative aspect enough. This would need larger font for the message, as well as some “hard sell” ad information.

Comparing disasters is insensitive to everyone. Also terrorist attacks are not equal to natural disasters. Outside reducing global warming, etc, there is the feeling that forces of nature are unfortunately inevitable. Soul-less acts of war on innocent people are a completely different ballgame. Wow.
