Tech: Foursquare isn’t doing too bad considering, y’know, Facebook Places

  • cause Facebook launched its Foursquare-aping “Facebook Places” feature, leading many to claim that the service was going to die soon. Because that’s what Facebook does. They rip off other services.
  • effect Instead, Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley tweeted this: “Just heard from The @HarryH that today was @foursquare’s biggest day ever in terms of new user signups.” Hmm. Interesting. source

Foursquare’s doomed. The only reason for the bump was the publicity associated with the Places launch. What distinctiveness does Foursquare bring to the table? If they can’t answer that, they’re goners.

That’s the problem that Facebook (and to a lesser extent, Twitter) creates. Basically they’re so big that they can take on any of the features from the startups and screw them over. If Twitter wanted to, they could kill HootSuite and CoTweet tomorrow. They’re already stepping on Topsy’s toes and TweetMeme’s. And Facebook? They tried to battle Twitter and realized it wasn’t worth it because it wasn’t a very natural fit. FourSquare? They can basically recreate the entire experience in a very natural way.
