We admit to not having seen the film yet, so any editorializing on our part would be critically ill-informed, but some who have seen it had incredibly strong reactions — this morning, MSNBC host Chris Hayes lambasted it as “objectively pro-torture,” and further suggested it “colludes with evil.” source
The former presidential candidate John McCain is one of three US senators who have criticised the depiction of torture in Zero Dark Thirty,Kathryn Bigelow’s fact-based drama about the hunt for Osama bin Laden. The film suggests that waterboarding and coercive interrogation tactics were instrumental in gathering information ahead of the successful raid on Bin Laden’s compound in May 2011.
McCain, a Republican senator for the state of Arizona, joined two Democrats – Dianne Feinstein and Carl Levin – to write a public letter to Michael Lynton, the chairman and chief executive of Sony Pictures, which backed the picture. They claim that Zero Dark Thirty is “grossly inaccurate and misleading in its suggestion that torture resulted in information that led to the capture”.
We haven’t had a chance to see the movie yet, but its already been met with a fair amount of controversy thanks to the aforementioned “enhanced interrogation” depiction. Have you had a chance to see the movie yet? What did you think of Zero Dark Thirty?
The new movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow, Academy Award-winning director of “The Hurt Locker”, portrays one version of the events that ultimately led to the death of Osama Bin Laden in his Abbottabad compound last year. While many eagerly await the film’s release, some have called it a propaganda film to boost President Obama’s image ahead of the election. To fight that notion, Sony has delayed the movie’s release from October to December, and a depiction of President Obama reportedly does not appear in the film. But, do you still think it was wrong for the White House to work with Bigelow and her team on production of the movie? source
If this facility is so secret that the name cannot even be seen by the public, then why in the world would the Obama administration allow filmmakers to tour it?Representative Peter King • Expressing his dismay over news that director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal were given access to Seal Team Six and information about the death of Osama bin Laden for their upcoming movie Zero Dark Thirty. Information which the Obama Administration has steadfastly defended from Freedom of Information Act inquiries, Congressional committees, and anyone else not involved in making movies about war-zones.
