In which a Groupon employee blackmails a restaurant: This one-star review doesn’t come without a degree of bias. See, Andy J. (aka Andrew Johnson) is a sales rep for Groupon, and in his last email to the business owner, he wrote this phrase: "As a resident of San Francisco for over 25 years, I have a huge network of friends (ages 25-40) that all are extremely active on Yelp as well as other social media. I will gladly let them know how you treated me as well as my feelings about the people who run Sauce." Blackmailing someone into using your service; yeah, that seems like an effective approach.

Hungry Chicagoans now have the option of ordering takeout or delivery directly through Yelp.Yelp announced today it is rolling out a new feature for ordering food and booking appointments; the news comes a little less than two months after Chicago’s GrubHub and New York City’s Seamless announced plans to merge.

This is such minor-yet-brilliant game-changer that it probably changes Yelp’s entire business model. Genius on their part. And suddenly, GrubLess has a major new competitor.

Clearly doing God’s work, Yelp has launched a Word Maps Google Maps mashup, exposing hotspots for keywords in certain cities, based on the site’s reviews. Above is a map of DC’s “hipster” hotspots, which is shockingly accurate, correctly pointing out H Street, U Street and 14th Street among others.

Obama bear-hugger’s pizza place attacked by angry Yelpers, drowned out by 5-star reviews

Panel A: The bear-hugging photo, showing Scott Van Duzer lifting the president in the air like a good buddy of his. (photo by Pablo Martinez Monsivais/AP)

Panel B: Negative reviews of Big Apple Pizza, the Fort Pierce, Fla. pizza joint that Van Duzer owns. Of the 690 reviews on the site, 12 are one-star negative reviews and another 33 have been deleted.

Panel C: After Daily Kos and HuffPo wrote about the negative reviews, an army of positive reviewers showed up, giving the restaurant a solid 5-star overall review.

Currently doing gangbusters: Yelp, which just launched its IPO today only to see it jump over 60 percent right out of the gate — despite the fact that stocks are down overall. That one-star review you wrote of that crappy restaurant near your house totally pushed them over the edge.

Google Acquires Zagat To Flesh Out Local Reviews
Foursquare might want to start upping their ante right now. Gowalla…well…I don’t know what to say.

What an interesting choice by Google. A surprisingly low-tech choice. Yelp is the company that should worry most about this purchase.
