The President has said repeatedly that members of Congress don’t get to demand ransom for fulfilling their basic responsibilities to pass a budget and pay the nation’s bills. Unfortunately, the latest proposal from House Republicans does just that, in a partisan attempt to appease a small group of tea party Republicans.
White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage - Responding to the latest debt ceiling proposal from House Republicans, as both Democrats and Republicans continue to do everything they can to hang the federal shutdown around the necks of their Congressional rivals work towards an end to the fifteen day (and counting) federal shutdown. In related news, Eater DC has a list of bars and restaurants where government employees can get cheap/free food and drinks during the furlough. Looks like it may come in handy for a few more weeks.

Once Republicans in Congress act to remove the threat of default and end this harmful government shutdown, the president will be willing to negotiate on a broader budget agreement to create jobs, grow the economy, and put our fiscal house in order.
Unidentified White House official - Responding to a new short-term deal from House GOP members,  which would extend the national debt limit without ending the federal shutdown; however, the White House has yet to outright threaten a veto of Republicans’ latest proposal. source

This doesn’t seem like a gratuitous display: Github, the home of numerous software repositories and a coder’s best friend, has a replica of the Oval Office in its building. Because that’s not weird or anything.

Now with 100,000 signatures: The White House “We the People” petition encouraging the Obama administration to pardon Edward Snowden. It took less than two weeks to hit the goal, which compels the Obama administration to respond. The goal was hit a day after Snowden was charged with multiple felonies.

I welcome this debate and I think it’s healthy for our Democracy. I think it’s a sign of maturity because probably five years ago, six years ago, we might not have been having this debate. I think it’s interesting that there are some folks on the left, but also some folks on the right who are now worried about it who weren’t very worried about it when it was a Republican president.

Of course, despite yesterday’s warming rhetoric, the NSA’s widespread data collection was a highly and tightly kept state secret, which rather undermines the idea that this is a debate the White House welcomes.

White House Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler will likely come under quite a bit of fire this week, thanks to a new Wall Street Journal report which claims she knew about the IRS audit scandal weeks before the media. Some have questioned President Obama’s competency as POTUS, after he claimed to find out about the scandal along with the public on May 10, though it seems Ruemmler indeed may not have informed the President about the issues after she was briefed on them by Treasury Department attorneys. (Photo via National Journal) source
