CNN Breaking News: House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz call on Rep. Weiner to resign.
Pelosi’s statement: ”Congressman Weiner has the love of his family, the confidence of his constituents, and the recognition that he needs help. I urge Congressman Weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a Member of Congress.”
The pressure’s on. Do you guys think he’ll resign?
At this point, 9 Democratic leaders have called for Anthony Weiner’s resignation:
- Former DNC Chairman and Virginia senate candidate Tim Kaine: “Lying is unforgivable,” Kaine told CBS-19, a Charlottesville, Va., television station. “Lying publicly about something like this is unforgiveable, and he should resign.” [more]
Yeah, if only we had a time machine so maybe they could toss Bill Clinton under the bus. Real gutsy guys. This makes me more ashamed of being a Dem than anything Weiner has done. Bleh!
Democrats throwing him under the bus left and right.
This is a massive overreaction and I don’t understand it.Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington Executive Director Melanie Sloan • Offering one of the few defenses to Rep. Anthony Weiner, who has been told by members of both parties that he should resign. Even close friends of his — including Fox News commentator Kirsten Powers, an ex-girlfriend of Weiner’s — are forcing the issue. In that case, what’s a little surprising is that he went out of his way to help Powers when her parents were stuck in Egypt during the Arab Spring, and she defended Weiner long after many correspondents quit. It took a lot for her to turn on him — though she now claims he used her. But for us, Sloan’s point — that Weiner likely did nothing illegal, considering that all of his affairs were virtual in nature, and a guy who actually paid for prostitutes, Sen. David Vitter, is still in office — isn’t really getting heard. He screwed up, but really? Really? Come on now. People do worse things every day. source (via • follow)
Jon Stewart cuts his hand while talking about Anthony Weiner: Oh God, he must’ve seen the chatlog on Radar (you can find it yourself, but there is a relevant, somewhat-distrubing Daily Show-related bit in it). Get well soon, Jon!
Today in pointing out the additional editorial value Newseum’s long-dormant watermark gives Anthony Weiner’s skin. (Yeah yeah, this is similar to our last post, but you really have to see the effect of the watermarks on that New York Post page close-up.)
Tom McGeveran in today’s The Front: A choice between observing Weiner’s humiliation and compounding it
Wow, The Daily News actually held back on being total jerks. On a side note, WHEN DID THE NEWSEUM bring back their watermarks? *grumble*
Should Weiner have done this? For an elected public official, it was unwise, inappropriate, stupid. For a human being, it remains well within the bounds of, well, human.Andrew Sullivan • Summing up our feelings on the Anthony Weiner disaster. Look, no one’s saying it was an honorable thing to do, but politicians regularly do much, much worse things than send a picture of their wang to someone online. And they don’t always get called out for it, either. source (via • follow)
Goodbye, Goolsbee: Austan Goolsbee, Obama’s chief economic advisor and the only guy in Washington who spells “Austan” with an “a,” is leaving the White House to resume teaching in Chicago. It’s a coincidence that the administration happened to announce this news today, when it was certain to be drowned out by the torrent of Anthony Weiner stories. I mean, it’s not like the White House is nervous that Goolsbee’s departure might create a perception of uncertainty regarding their grasp of the economy, right? Nah. source

The best way to get bad news. I would have felt less grumpy about the situation if I had seen this before reading it elsewhere.
Everything’s better with a little wiener … dog.
