Here’s why pot smokers might have a problem getting a legal high in Washington

  • 2,600 the number of would-be marijuana growers that applied after Washington state legalized marijuana in 2012.
  • 80 the number of growers, out of that gigantic pool, that successfully received licenses to grow marijuana. Part of the problem is that the state’s Liquor Control Board faces a huge backlog of applicants.
  • 560k the size, in square footage, of the marijuana farms currently in production that have received state approval. That’s the size of just 10 football fields—and that’s leading to concerns about a shortage when legal marijuana sales begin this week. source

Bridge collapses in Washington state — cars, people in water
(Photo: Gina Cole / Skagit Valley Herald)
A bridge along Interstate-5 in Washington State collapsed on Thursday evening, leaving at least two cars and some people submerged in water, according to Washington State Patrol.
Read the complete story.

The bridge had structural deficiency issues and was considered “functionally obsolete” twice in the past two decades. However, that’s not exactly a surprise, as 759 of the state’s bridges actually score lower on the deficiency scale than this one in the state of Washington.

As we mentioned earlier, police in Washington state have concluded an exhausting standoff with a man ensconced in an elaborate mountain bunker, which he himself built. Described as a “survivalist,” Peter Keller, 41, was wanted for the murder of his wife and daughter, who were found shot over last weekend. Authorities were tipped off to the existence of the bunker by the boyfriend of Keller’s daughter, who said she’d told him her father was stockpiling supplies in the wilderness. After entering his mountainside hideaway, authorities found Keller’s dead body inside, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. (Photos released by the King County Sheriff’s Department)
