sushiinthecan asks: So, is there anything we can do to avoid this? Or at least know if what we are about to reblog is infected?

» SFB says: Yes — the key thing is to check your browser to make sure there’s nothing rogue on it (say, extensions you didn’t install) and to be sure everything is updated to the latest version, and as far as reblogging stuff, click on the “HTML” tag in the posting interface to view the source code. If there is something there that shouldn’t be — it’d look similar to the top image on our last post, particularly the top line — delete it. It appears to be a browser hijack rather than a theme hijack, as it adds the code to the bottom of posts, but users can spread the offending code on their own Tumblrs unwittingly. It looks like the code adds ad links to affected Tumblrs. — Ernie @ SFB

Of note/concern: Early this morning, we spotted a Tumblr user who was unknowingly having spyware injected onto their reblogs. We could tell this because of code added at the bottom of their pages. No word of how widespread this is, but doing a search shows that multiple Tumblrs are affected by the code injection. Suffice it to say: Be careful what you reblog.

EDIT: Some advice on how to avoid the hijack.

Hey Tumblefolk, just a warning: If you see someone with this image on their feed, DO NOT CLICK. It is a scam. Do not want you guys to get your password stolen. (Also, they spelled frappuccino wrong.)

City Room: N.Y.P.D. Video of Occupy Wall Street protest - 1 (by nytcityroom)

Huh. Well that’s interesting. But at the same time, it’s totally understandable if a ton of people didn’t hear this — those chants were super-loud and it was hard to make out what the police officer said even in the video.

Scenes from Joplin, and fears of further storms: The death toll in Joplin continued to grimly creep upwards today, with 117 now confirmed dead, and relief and rescue services still faced with such a job that you should probably brace for that number to change again. To make matters worse, the NOAA has issued warnings of severe storms the next few days across a broad swath of the American heartland, with Joplin lying in the highest risk zone. Please do everything possible to stay safe, everybody. source

Protip: We’ve been seeing a lot of Tumblr likespam like this in our dashboard today. Don’t click the usernames. The links go to really bad places.

  • fake The TSA is warning travelers to be careful when bringing thermoses or coffee cups onto planes because they might be used for transporting bombs. While they have no specific threat, they admit it could possibly be a danger. Uh, okay … thanks for telling us on Christmas Eve!
  • real A pilot recorded, using his camera phone, an *ACTUAL* security hole at one of California’s largest airports. The TSA then went to his home and confiscated his gun, which he has to protect himself in the cockpit. Wait, wait, how will that help solve the real problem? source
