Paul Ryan’s initial likability: Not so likable, it turns out

  • 39% the percentage of folks polled by Gallup who gave Paul Ryan “excellent” or “pretty good” marks after he was picked
  • 46% the percentage of folks who gave Sarah Palin similar marks after she was picked back in 2008 — obviously, that didn’t hold very well
  • 47% the percentage of folks who gave Joe Biden similar marks when he was picked by Obama back in 2008 — before, you know, gaffes source

» What “bounce”? And, as it turns out, Romney’s pick of Ryan didn’t exactly give him a desired jump in the polls. Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight puts it like so: “This is a below-average ‘bounce’ for the selection of a vice presidential candidate. In past elections, the bounce has averaged in the neighborhood of 4 percentage points instead.” Silver has Romney well behind Obama in the electoral vote count.

Director Petraeus feels very privileged to be able to continue to serve our country in his current position, and as he has stated clearly numerous times before, he will not seek elected office.
CIA Spokesman Preston Golson • Trying to tamp down the the rumor of the day — that his boss, CIA director David Petraeus, may be sought by the Romney campaign as a VP candidate. Petraeus has been resolute in past answers regarding a turn to elected office, insisting he has no intentions to do so. If Petraeus did end up as Romney’s running-mate, though, he’d have a recent resume similar to a past, winning vice president; George H.W. Bush was CIA director years prior to his 1980 election as Ronald Reagan’s number two. source (viafollow)

It was the first time in my career, my life, I realized someone could go out — and I probably shouldn’t say this with the press here, but — no, but it’s more important. You’re more important. For the first time in my life I understood how someone could consciously decide to commit suicide. Not because they were deranged, not because they were nuts; because they’d been to the top of the mountain and they just knew in their heart they’d never get there again, that it was never going to be that way ever again. That’s how an awful lot of you feel.
Vice President Joe Biden • Addressing a group associated with the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, which supports friends and families of service members who are killed in action. Biden’s wife and daughter were killed in a car accident in 1972, and he realizes how important this story could be to others. He notes that Jill, his current wife, really helped him through his tough times. “This woman literally saved my life,” Biden said. Things are looking more positive for Biden and his family these days: Just yesterday, their 30-year-old daughter, Ashley, was married. source (viafollow)

This is important… It is an honor to be a part of the system.
Vice President Joe Biden • The VP was called for jury duty in his home state of Delaware, and waited in the courthouse Monday before being released with the rest of the prospective jury pool. Unnamed jurors claimed Biden was friendly while waiting, joking about whether they’d mispronounce his name. source (viafollow)
