A model on Twitter live-tweeted about how married actor Brian Presley was trying to picke her up on a plane.

Take this story with a grain of salt: See, her boyfriend Anthony is best buds with this guy named Opie, and she once lied about having a winning lottery ticket.

A quick reminder of what’s at stake in Novemb … oh, who are we kidding? This is just hilarious/sad. What’s next? Kel Mitchell asking Joe Biden for an orange soda hookup?

  • cause On Sunday, Pakistan blocked Twitter, in response to claims that the site was promoting a Facebook contest that encouraged blasphemy. “The material was promoting a competition on Facebook to post images of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad,” said Mohammad Yaseen of Pakistan Telecommunications Authority.
  • reaction Users were confused about the ban, which they suggested was counterproductive and only promoted posting such images. “I never heard of any caricatures on Twitter. Now this ban will be promoting whatever caricatures were posted on it,” said widely-followed Middle East Institute professor Arif Rafiq. source

This will be one of the biggest years for our company ever. We have some pretty aggressive projections, and we’ve been beating those projections month after month.
HootSuite co-founder Ryan Holmes • Discussing his social media company, which recently closed out a $50 million investment round and may be on the way to a half-billion valuation — which is extremely impressive for what’s effectively a social media management company. It’s easy to see why, though: The company manages to hit the low end of the market (96 percent of its users pay nothing) and the high end (some companies pay $100,000 a month for services) pretty effectively. While Holmes has had many offers to sell, he’d prefer to keep his business independent and perhaps even give Vancouver, where it’s based, a tech sector or its own. Pretty cool.

Don’t work too hard on a tweet. When you see people trying to, for example, synthesize two current news stories into one ‘clever’ tweet, it can get pretty clunky and their labor is obvious, rendering their tweet unfunny.
Comedian Rob Delaney • Winner of the first “Funniest Person on Twitter” title from the Comedy Awards. The comedian, whose tweets include misdirections like “Isn’t it fun how many different shapes pasta can be? My wife left me last night,” was awarded this honor on Sunday on Comedy Central. Social media has certainly played an important role in the relationship between comedians and their fans lately; Amy Poehler, however, called Twitter a “mistake waiting to happen.” Is it worth it for comedians to rough the rocky seas of the Internet?  source (viafollow)

We took a hard look and decided we weren’t going to win. But we had found out a lot of our users were actually using Tagged to meet new people, so that led us to pivot into a new space called ‘social discovery,’ where people use sites to make new social relationships.
Tagged co-founder and CEO Greg Tseng • Explaining why his somewhat-under-the-radar social network has become one of the most engaging social networks — in the ballpark of such heavyweights as Pinterest, Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter. That’s because Tagged is more obsessed with helping you find new friends — a strategy that’s worked pretty well for them. Tseng puts it this way — referencing a stat that says you can manage 150 connections at once: “Facebook is the place where you maintain your current 150,” he says. “And Tagged will be the place where you refresh that 150.”

In which the BBC appears to defeat the purpose of Twitter. At least for this guy. Other BBC officials are denying this is the case across the board. The guy hasn’t commented on the topic since the tweet. He probably wouldn’t be able to take questions anyway.

George Zimmerman’s legal team begins full-scale social media campaign
Attorney Mark O’Mara says the campaign was launched in an effort to discredit fake websites and profiles. Zimmerman, whose first website netted him over $200,000 in donations, now has a virtual presence on Twitter and Facebook, as well as a much more polished site. All three are being maintained by O’Mara who, in his first post online, said he understands “it is unusual for a legal defense to maintain a social media presence on behalf of a defendant, but we also acknowledge that this is a very unusual case.” source

The Innovators Patent Agreement (IPA) is a new way to do patent assignment that keeps control in the hands of engineers and designers. It is a commitment from a company to its employees that patents can only be used for defensive purposes. The company will not use the patents in offensive litigation without the permission of the inventors. This control flows with the patents, so if the company sells the patents to others, the assignee can only use the patents as the inventor intended.
A quote from Twitter’s Github page • Discussing the company’s “Innovators Patent Agreement,” a document designed to ensure a company’s patents are used merely for defensive purposes, rather than for patent trolling or aggressive attacks against competitors, and that developers and inventors have more influence over their usage. As patent battles have greatly damaged the tech industry in recent years, particularly in the case of Eolas Technologies’ lawsuits against Microsoft, a Creative Commons-style approach to patent technologies seems like a great idea. Twitter doesn’t have a pristine track record as far as playing nice, but when it comes down to trying to do the right thing, they’re better at it than most other social media companies.
