Anonymity is a major factor to this, Nahai says, as is the lack of clear human response. “There is no filter for this,” she says. “Social platforms provide one of those modes of communication where you can be absolutely horrendous and not worry about it. When we talk to someone on the phone we are primed to respond to voices and it’s a much more intimate way of communicating. This is such an obvious troll. For example, this bus is totally photoshopped. If it’s apparently going on its “third tour,” you’d think they’d have actual photos of it by now.
So, Michelle Obama joined Twitter today. And out came the trolls. Don’t click if you value humanity, because you may not when you’re done reading. And props to BuzzFeed for leaving on the names in case anyone wants to call out these idiots who think the First Lady is fat.
