The President was referring to Nazi death camps operated in Poland. The President has demonstrated in word and deed his rock-solid commitment to our close alliance with Poland.
Tommy Vietor, National Security Council Spokesman • Regarding President Obama’s words about “Polish death camps” earlier today. As we just mentioned, Obama dropped that phrasing during today’s ceremony for Medal of Freedom recipients, one being late Polish resistance hero Jan Karski. A slew of condemnation and calls for apology resulted from various Polish political figures, incensed that the words seemed to imply a Polish effort to establish death camps, as opposed to making it clear that the camps were established under Nazi occupation.
