Knife-wielding man shot, killed by police in Times Square: The shooting, which took place at 3 p.m. Saturday, happened after the man reportedly threatened tourists and bystanders, was sprayed with pepper spray, and attempted to rush police. “He continued to advance on uniformed officers, refusing officers’ repeated commands to drop his weapon,” said police spokesperson Paul J. Brown. The shooting happened at a particularly rough hour for something like this — at a point in the week when Times Square is loaded with tourists. (photo by Lincoln Rocha for The New York Times)

I was just doing my job. … It was a crazy day, but I’m thankful that I made it home safe.NYC Detective Marcelo Razzo • Humbly taking credit for his role in stopping serial stabbing suspect Maksim Gelman yesterday morning. Razzo was one of three cops who helped subdue the man suspected in a series of murders, carjackings and assorted other violent acts. Razzo was off-duty – and just happened to be on the train – when he helped stop the suspect, who was dramatically caught on a subway train underneath Times Square. Razzo ran from the third car to the first to help subdue him. Good work. Better response. source (via • follow)
New York to ban smoking in Central Park, Times Square and the beaches, including Coney Island
You’re going to ban smoking in Times Sqaure.
You’re going to ban smoking in Times Square.
Look, I’m a smoker, and I’m all with other people being absolutely grossed out by my existence. I get it; so am I, on some level. I won’t smoke in your outdoor cafes because it’s not fair to non-smokers, and to be completely honest it is super great being able to come home from a bar smelling only of beer.
But explain to me how exactly you are going to ban smoking in Times Square.

I’m scared to sleep with him here. I actually changed my flight to go home a couple of days early - this guy’s been acting crazy.Portuguese celebrity journalist Carlos Castro • Speaking to a friend about Renato Seabra, his former lover who he went to NYC with. Castro never made it back home, reportedly dying in a wild fight with Seabra where the 20-year-old reality TV star did some things to him we choose not to repeat. If you want the full details on those, go to the link to New York Daily News, who has less of a squeam factor than we do. As for Seabra, he’s currently being held in a psychiatric facility. This story kind of got buried yesterday in the wake of the Giffords tragedy, but, really, it’s no less shocking – and involves a fairly well-known celebrity in Portugal. source (via • follow)
