Facebook Timeline of the Day: Ernie Smith, the founder of ShortFormBlog, a breaking news website, stole a (Facebook) page from the New York Times and its terrifically detailed timeline, spending a month or so with illustrator Ben Claassen III to create a backstory for the “face” of the blog, Julius the laid-off RSS robot. Says Smith: “It’s as though Julius is at the forefront of publishing, even if he kind of fails along the way.”
Not to be missed: Julius gets scooped by Drudge in the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
Whoa. Thanks to TDW for taking the time to check it out!
Any of this ringing a bell? Because I’ll never forget that night. I’ll never forget the horrific photos. I’ll never forget reading the terrifying police report. And I’ll never forgive you for forgiving him.The Daily What • Writing in a post directed at pop star Rihanna, which attempts to lecture her on interacting with Chris Brown on Twitter and other places. The article is problematic for a few reasons, most notably the line above, which ends the piece, and also the way it seemingly attempts to pin blame on the victim for the incident. Rihanna went through a bunch of stuff — in public, mind you — and by personifying the anger, TDW makes a tactical error that has inspired a number of angry responses. A thought: Sometimes it’s best to play something straight down the middle and let the reader decide how they feel about an issue, rather than putting yourself in the middle.
Remember, these guys won a Shorty award for best microblog on Tumblr over Soup. Kind of bizarre that they, of all sites, would just stop posting. We can’t imagine they’re ignoring the community. Did a plugin break or something?
EDIT: It’s worth noting that TDW is one of the most prominent Tumblr blogs (as well as one of the most controversial), so if they don’t post for a couple days, it stands out.
New rule: All winners of the “Microblog of the Year on Tumblr” Shorty Award must not have a main site that clearly has a Wordpress.com banner on it. Sure, they have a Tumblr site — but it’s clearly not the main one. (And yes, before you ask — we once had a WordPress site. But the Tumblr is now our full-time thang.)
See, when we complain enough, stuff happens. Great to know that they were receptive to our request.
