  • 36 people killed at least, across nineteen states, from steroid injections carrying fungal meningitis. Reports today reveal that a federal grand jury has issued subpoenas to employees of the New England Compounding Center (NECC), the pharmacy where the tainted vials were produced. reuters:

Twitter is appealing a judge’s decision requiring the social media company to turn over an Occupy Wall Street protester’s tweets and account information to Manhattan prosecutors.

In June, Criminal Court Judge Matthew Sciarrino ruled that releasing Malcolm Harris’s tweets would not violate his privacy, since he had posted them on a public website.

Harris, a Brooklyn-based writer, was arrested with hundreds of other Occupy members during a mass march across the Brooklyn Bridge last fall.

The case has focused attention on a number of murky legal questions surrounding the use of social media, including whether users own the content they post publicly and whether companies like Twitter can prevent authorities from using that information to prosecute social media users.

Twitter has historically fought for its users’ rights in cases like these. So props.

If the Iranian government was to attempt to coercively obtain this information from journalists and activists of foreign nations, human rights groups around the world would speak out.
Julian Assange • Expressing anger towards the U.S. government’s subpoena of Twitter over Wikileaks, which has been under wraps until now. Wikileaks is also concerned about whether they’ve been doing the same thing with We’re with Assange. He has a perfectly valid point here. We put the U.S. up to a double-standard that we wouldn’t be caught dead allowing the rest of the world to follow. And it doesn’t get any more obvious until secret subpoenas are part of the deal. It’s times like these that we wish Twitter was decentralized. source (viafollow)
