No more. The shrieks and the howls are all we’ve got now. They pass for intellectual debate, addressed in academic departments and dissected in journals that once had greater concerns in mind. The isms that once struggled for primacy had given way to topical outrages: about income inequality, about the gold standard, about drones, about Benghazi, about Israel, about Stephen Colbert. And that’s the real danger: not that this political camp or that is growing intolerant, but that both are getting incorrigibly dumb.

All Out of Ideas: The Dumbing Down of American Discourse

A nutshell of why current culture war debates feel so brain-melting.

Transgressive comedy, especially when it’s coming out of the mouth of a character espousing what the writers and the performer despise, is so dependent not just on context but on delivery—which are two things that Twitter strips from it.
Comedian Harry Shearer • Discussing comedy’s poor translation from screen to tweet, in the context of the whole Colbert thing. Another relevant point Shearer told The Daily Beast: “[Satire] is a very blunt weapon. You don’t use it against normal people. You aim it at the people with the guns.”

There is simply no prize for taking the most time to consider, posting the most even-handed and nuanced reaction, demanding the most proportionate punishment. If I’m being honest, this post itself is proof of that. No news site is going to get a billion clicks rushing out the headline: Internet User Considers Facts, Decides Tweet Was Maybe In Poor Judgment But With Extenuating Circumstances.
One of many takes on Colbert and Twitter you’ll read over the next 24 hours, this one from Time’s James Poniewozik.

You might remember a while back that our boy Stephen Colbert earned a little bit of controversy over his decision to keynote a speech for RSA, a company accused of installing a backdoor into its security software for the NSA. Here’s how he handled it. As it turns out, he’s his usual self-aware self—though he pushed back on some of the evidence against RSA. Also, he made a Bitcoin joke.

Stephen Colbert may want to cancel: The security company RSA, currently facing major blowback from the tech world due to reports that it installed a backdoor into its software for the NSA, is having a conference in the next month. The closing speaker? You’re looking at him. This probably does not play well into his image.

sensiblestupidity says: Colbert is (supposedly) on tumblr- on the 4th of July, a tumblr account claiming to be Colbert's official tumblr was created and started posting. Can't say I know its url though

» SFB says: I had not heard this, and considering there are about three bajillion (generally great) Colbert fan sites on Tumblr, this seems like a tough needle to pull out of the hay; can anyone verify? Say, Comedy Central? — Ernie @ SFB

I’m about to live through one of the scariest moments of my life. Just doing my best to focus and be grateful for a job that constantly challenges me. This is going to be a disaster. YOLO.

You’ll be fine, dude! Just give Colbert crap about not being on Tumblr and you’ll be cooler than Robert Wexler.
