Lethal stampede occurs at festival in Madhya Pradesh, India

  • 91people killed in a panic-fueled stampede on a bridge in central India today. The bridge, in Madhya Pradesh, was thick with people attending a Hindu festival when (according to Indian officials) a rumor may have spread that it was going to collapse. This sparked a lethal surge of people trying to flee (the BBC also says “other reports” suggest panic was stirred by police using batons to try to control the crowd). A deputy police inspector stated 10 more people are in critical condition. source

Ivory Coast stampede: Dozens killed, hundreds injured after fireworks display

  • 60+ killed last night in a stampede in Abidjan, which took place outside of a football stadium after a fireworks display. Another 200 or more were injured in the incident, which mostly affected children and teenagers. ”I don’t know what happened but I found myself lying on the ground with people stepping on me, pulling my hair or tearing my clothes,” said one woman, who gave her name as Zeinab, regarding the stampede. source

People were stuck on the bridge, they could not move, so they pushed others into the water. I was stuck on the bridge for five hours and I could not move.
