Good luck to Lee and all of the other nominees at this year’s Shorty Awards. As a former nominee, I have a few friends in the mix this year, and I hope, whoever wins in the Tumblr of the Year category, their hand gets sore from giving out so many high-fives. — Ernie @ SFB
This mindset is exactly why creative shows of color don’t get to exist on television anymore. There’s an overbearing sense of entitlement that refuses to allow shows of color to thrive. (Having given out quite a few awards in my day, I know exactly the kind of racism she’s talking about in her piece.)
First off: Congrats to the creators of the “We Are the 99 Percent” Tumblr, who won a Shorty Award tonight for Microblog of the Year on Tumblr. (As I told them, I didn’t even write an acceptance speech because I knew they would win. Still had fun.) I got a chance to meet both of them tonight, and I admit to learning a ton from by just listening. Really cool to hear all that perspective in person. Too many encounters in the media are cut down to a soundbite. It’s nice to take a step back, listen and consider. That’s what I felt like I got to do tonight. It was great. The Shorty Awards, honoring the top content producers on the social web, are once again presenting the 2nd annual Tumblr of the Year Shorty Award. The winner will be honored at their ceremony in March in NYC. This year the Shorty’s are also honoring the best Tumblr Brand Presence.
Last year the ceremony was hosted by The Daily Show’s Aasif Mandvi, and past winners include Conan O’Brien, Cory Booker, Sesame Street’s Grover, Suze Orman, Ted Leo, Neil Patrick Harris and NASA. You could be next!

upsidedownspirit asks: On the topic of Shorty Nominations, I think it'd be a brilliant idea to encourage people to vote for Missing e in the Apps category. Not only because it's an extremely useful browser plugin, but also because of the aggressive scare tactics Tumblr has taken against Missing e users. If Missing e ends up as a finalist, or better yet wins the category, I think it'd be a really crushing blow to Tumblr's staff.

Not to be asking too much or anything, but … This year’s Shorty Awards are happening again, and we’re looking to put a little effort into getting on them this year. We’re hoping for showings in two categories this year: Blogger and the Microblog of the Year on Tumblr special category. Either would be awesome, but anything you can offer would be great! Thanks for reading, y’all, and we hope you enjoy all the cool stuff we throw up.
New rule: All winners of the “Microblog of the Year on Tumblr” Shorty Award must not have a main site that clearly has a Wordpress.com banner on it. Sure, they have a Tumblr site — but it’s clearly not the main one. (And yes, before you ask — we once had a WordPress site. But the Tumblr is now our full-time thang.)
