  • Last Week proponents of gun control were celebrating a major victory in the Senate after numerous Republicans crossed party lines to end debate on a Senate proposal which would require background checks for firearms sold online or at gun shows.
  • Today things aren’t looking so great for the proposed expanding of the nation’s background check requirements, with Democrats reporting a lack of success in convincing at least 9 members of the Republican party to support the proposal. Of course, even if it makes it out of the Senate, few have high hopes for the background check legislation in the Republican-dominated House of Representatives. source

Whenever a society adopts racial entitlements, it is very difficult to get out of them through the normal political processes. Even the name of it is wonderful, the Voting Rights Act. Who’s going to vote against that?
Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia • Expressing his continued disapproval of the Voting Rights Act, which the conservative-leaning judge apparently views as a “racial preferment.” Thankfully, much of the rest of the Supreme Court (and the United States as a whole, we’d wager) doesn’t seem to agree with him. source

  • 50.7 percent of the vote went to interim Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, former vice president under deceased leader Hugo Chavez, during the country’s special election on Sunday.
  • 49.1 percent of the vote went to Maduro’s top rival, Henrique Capriles, who has announced plans to contest the results of the election. Capriles says his team has collected more than 3,000 reports of polling place irregularities, including possible gun violence and illegal poll re-openings.
  • 235K votes separated the two nominees, though Venezuela’s election board has since declared the win “irreversible”, which certainly doesn’t bode well for a potential challenge from Henrique Capriles. source

Before I am an artist, I am a father, a son, and a brother to some of the most cherished women in the world. So for me to suggest in any way that harm and violation be brought to a woman is one of my biggest mistakes and regrets. As an artist, one of the most liberating things is being able to paint pictures with my words. But with that comes a great responsibility. And most recently, my choice of words was not only offensive, it does not reflect my true heart. And for this, I apologize. To every woman that has felt the sting of abuse, I apologize. I recognize that as an artist I have a voice and with that, the power of influence. To the young men who listen to my music, please know that using a substance to rob a woman of her right to make a choice is not only a crime, it’s wrong and I do not encourage it. To my fans, I also apologize if I have disappointed you. I can only hope that this sparks a healthy dialogue and that I can contribute to it.

My daughter wasn’t bullied to death, she was disappointed to death. Disappointed in people she thought she could trust, her school, and the police. She was my daughter, but she was your daughter too. For the love of God do something.
Glen Canning, father of Rehtaeh Parsons • In a new op-ed/statement published by the Huffington Post on Thursday. Parsons died on Sunday night, following a suicide attempt which is believed to have been the result of extensive post-rape bullying. Be warned, while we definitely think more people should see the grieving father’s words, you won’t find an easy read behind the source link. source

White House spokesman Jay Carney • Responding to questions about a newly released Jay-Z track which seems to suggest that Hov and Beyonce got permission from the White House to travel to Cuba last week. When pressed on the matter, Carney once again denied that President Obama ever spoke with Mr. and Mrs. Knowles-Carter about their trip, saying that Open Letter “is only a song.” source
