I have a soft spot for Joe Biden,” he said. “I like him. But he’s dumb as an ashtray.
Exclusive Excerpt: Roger Ailes Off Camera, Vanity Fair (via brooklynmutt)

In which Ailes simultaneously plays into his own image and Biden’s Onion-bestowed image.

Fair and Balanced: Here’s a handwritten note, circa-2005, wherein the president of Fox News writes to a Bush administration official—on Fox News stationary—and offers to “help off the record” if needed. The administration official in question was Condoleezza Rice, then-Secretary of State; Rice replied with a generic form letter. The note was obtained by Gawker’s John Cook, who wrote: “Please just imagine for a moment how Fox News would cover the publication of a private note from the editor of the New York Times to an Obama Administration official offering ‘help off the record.’” source

Following up on a remark made by Fox News chief Roger Ailes earlier this week, when he said Jon Stewart told him “in a bar” that he was a socialist. Well, we’re no closer to knowing how Stewart talks when he’s knocking back brews with Roger Ailes (a sublimely dissonant image), but as a dashing young man talking with Larry King he clearly had no fear of the “S” word.

Jon Stewart is a comedian. He wouldn’t do well without Fox. And he basically has admitted to me, in a bar, that he’s a socialist.
Fox News chief Roger Ailes • Speaking about “The Daily Show” host at Ohio University on Monday. This is malarkey — Jon Stewart would never go to a bar with Roger Ailes!

  • one On networks that criticize Fox News: “Everybody who’s getting their ass beat vilifies the opponent. This is the first rule of fighting.” Boom.
  • two On an anchor he thinks does it wrong: ”Wolf Blitzer is an excellent reporter, but he’s not a star.” He says his back is to the camera too much.
  • three And the coup de grace, on one of his most notable hires: “I hired Sarah Palin because she was hot and got ratings.” Whew. source

Good read of the day: New York Magazine has an interesting profile up on Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes. The main crux of the article? By increasing Fox’s ratings, he may have also cost the GOP the election in 2012. (Oh also, the network’s divorce with Glenn Beck was messy.)
