YouTube is now home to the ressurection of David Brent, the starring character of the original verison of The Office, a landmark British show that essentially launched Ricky Gervais’ career in television and film (as well spawning the much-beloved American version). Whether YouTube’s efforts at drawing original content for their native channels will ultimately pay off competitively is yet to be clear, but it seems a certainty that devotees of David Brent (in the interests of full disclosure, this includes at least a couple of us) will be grateful for the effort. source

  • 69th Ricky Gervais hosted this show for the fourth time despite literally no one, including himself, believing that he would. Check out his opening monologue and you can spot the 70th Annual Golden Globes hosts sitting together and looking fabulous at 3:10. Ricky ended up using the F-word during the ceremony, but who can blame him?
  • 68th For his third time hosting, Ricky did a wonderful job. And then rumors started flying that he would be fired after his performance. “That’s ominous, isn’t it?” he asked OK! Magazine, when he hadn’t been asked to return for the 69th show yet. “So I probably won’t be here next year.”
  • 67th This marked the second time that Ricky hosted the award show; in 2008, the year before, the Golden Globes saw the worst ratings since 1995. This was probably because those Globes were pretty much cancelled due to the writers’ strike. So, this might be, technically, the first time we really saw Ricky host the awards.

» A new feminine touch: Next up? The leading ladies Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are excited to host the 70th Annual Golden Globe awards. “They’re two of the funniest people in show business,” Globes’ executive producer Allen Shapiro said. In a statement, Ricky wished the two luck: “After failing three years in a row to make E! Channel’s Best Dressed list, I decided to hand over the reins. Let me know if you run out of Scientology gags.” Tina and Amy have been besties for over a decade, so this ceremony should be a treat to watch.source

mashable:

Check out Ricky Gervais’ opening monologue from last night’s Golden Globe Awards. Among the highlights:

“For any of you that don’t know, the Golden Globes are just like the Oscars but without all that ‘esteem.’ The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. Basically.”

“Now, the Hollywood Foreign Press have warned me that if I insult any of you, or any of them, or offend any viewers or cause any controversy whatsoever, they’ll definitely invite me back next year as well.”

How did Mr. Gervais do?

This was funny, but he was funnier last year when he turned Tim Allen’s career into a pinata to smash around at will. His Johnny Depp bit was pretty good, though.

The return of Ricky Gervais to the Golden Globes will be one of the highlights of our year, and it should be yours too, if this disturbing-yet-hilarious tweet name-dropping (and featuring) Oscar host Billy Crystal is any sign. Ricky also needs to host the Tonys. And the Grammys. And the CMAs. And the Billboard Latin Music Awards. And the Oscars. In fact, if he gave up his career as a TV and movie star and just hosted awards shows all year, we would be content.

Gervais Invited Back to Host Golden Globes, Do You Think He Should Return?
Gawker:

They may have complained about his “totally unacceptable” jokes, but Golden Globes organizers have asked comedian Ricky Gervais to host the awards for a third time next year, according to Gervais. He told Heat magazine, “I don’t think I should.”

Let this be a lesson: If you bring in the ratings, people will put up with your crap. Who would talk about the Golden Globes if he wasn’t host?

Ricky Gervais so mean, Judd Apatow now defending Tim Allen: Not only are we still talking about Ricky Gervais’ “Golden Globes” rips, but Judd Apatow is defending TIM ALLEN, who Gervais hilariously compared to living legend Tom Hanks. LOL. source Follow ShortFormBlog

He definitely crossed the line, and some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that’s Ricky.
HFPA President Phillip Berk • Ricky Gervais repeatedly said, prior to hosting the Golden Globes last night, that they would “not invite me back.” Boy, was he right. In one of the most awkward yet intriguing award show performances in recent memory, Gervais forced some in the crowd to smile for the cameras whilst being taunted in a way that Robert Downey Jr. called “hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones.”  source (viafollow)

As an atheist, I see nothing ‘wrong’ in believing in a god. I don’t think there is a god, but belief in him does no harm. If it helps you in any way, then that’s fine with me. It’s when belief starts infringing on other people’s rights when it worries me.
Ricky Gervais • In a lengthy essay he wrote for the Wall Street Journal titled “A Holiday Message from Ricky Gervais: Why I’m An Atheist.” He points out that he wasn’t always this way: “I loved Jesus. He was my hero. More than pop stars. More than footballers. More than God. God was by definition omnipotent and perfect. Jesus was a man. He had to work at it.” But one day, his older brother questioned him about his religion, and then he started thinking about it, and that was that. Gervais ends the essay with a pretty simple but smart point about the whole matter: “You won’t burn in hell. But be nice anyway.” Good to know. source (viafollow)
