But the negotiations collapsed in acrimony because Gingrich and Santorum could not agree on who would get to be president. ‘In the end,’ Gingrich says, ‘it was just too hard to negotiate.’

Bloomberg Businessweek has a story about how Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich nearly ran for president together on a quote-unquote “Unity” ticket.

Hope that second to pick yourself up from fainting helped.

The race for the Republican presidential nomination has always been about restoring the promise of America. Senator Santorum and I share an absolute commitment to that goal.
Mitt Romney • In a statement, released late Tuesday afternoon, thanking Rick Santorum for officially endorsing his campaign. “We share an absolute commitment to reversing the failing policies of the Obama administration,” Romney continued, “from its assault on freedom of conscience to its feckless foreign policy.” Rick Santorum sent an email to supporters late Tuesday night, endorsing Romney, and warning that the GOP “will require all hands on deck if our nominee is to be victorious.”  source (viafollow)

Next to Gingrich’s petulant posturing, Romney looked like a grown-up…In losing in the most undignified manner possible, Gingrich made Romney shine. And for that, Romney owes Gingrich his gratitude.
The Atlantic’s Molly Ball • Arguing that Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum’s prolonged candidacies did, in one sense, benefit Mitt Romney. “By behaving childishly and running totally amateurish campaigns, they made Romney look good,” she writes. There is something to be said for this; however, whether the “I’m not as bad as the other guys!” effect will stick with Romney through the general election seems like an iffy proposition. If anything, their campaigns made Romney look good coming out of the primary, but we’re doubtful that effect will last too long once President Obama’s campaign, which will likely be top-notch, becomes the object of comparison. source (viafollow)

This race was as improbable as any race you’ll ever see for President. I want to thank God for that, and thank all of you for that.

notnadia asks: If Mitt Romney is Adam Scott in this Party Down analogy, then Rick Santorum is most definitely Ken Marino. Are we having fun yet?

» SFB says: Ron Paul is Martin Starr. I wonder if, after Mitt was done bodyboarding, he showed up at the California College Conservative Union Caucus. — Ernie @ SFB

  • 1960 In a speech on religion during his presidential run, noted Catholic John F. Kennedy famously argued the importance of the separation of church and state, saying “I am the Democratic Party’s candidate for President who happens also to be a Catholic.”
  • 2011 Noted Catholic presidential candidate Rick Santorum said a few, uh, less famous words about the speech: ”I almost threw up. In my opinion it was the beginning of the secular movement of politicians to separate their faith from the public square.”
  • 2012 Noted Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan offered his take on both Kennedy’s quote and Santorum’s: “I find myself, believe it or not, agreeing with both of them.” Dolan explained that he thinks Kennedy’s speech has long been misinterpreted. source

I hit him as hard as I could. He hit me hard as he could. It turned out he had more things to hit with than I did.
Newt Gingrich • Sounding pretty close to making a concession speech to Mitt Romnney in an interview on “Fox News Sunday” this morning. Gingrich, who previously sounded like he was banking on a brokered convention in Tampa to revive his hopes, stuck behind that manta, but says that Romney “far and away the most likely Republican nominee,” suggesting that Gingrich is seeing that possibility mostly as a pipe dream. Rick Santorum, currently running second, has said that he needs to win his home state of Pennsylvania to stay in the race — which looks like it might be difficult, as his fundraising is very weak at the moment. In other words, the inevitable is starting to look more and more inevitable.

  • 39% of people in Pennsylvania view Santorum favorably source

» The problem? People know him: Nearly six years after Rick Santorum lost a Senate election by an embarrassing margin, his perception in his home state of Pennsylvania has never really recovered. The AP story at the source link explains how Santorum really blew it at a meeting with conservative leaders in the state back in 2006, and how the encounter has come to haunt him. Also of note — few Pennsylvania politicians have publicly endorsed anyone, and the few that have are backing Romney. Santorum, by some estimates, needs to win 80 percent of the delegates to even have a shot at winning.

Whether Rick Santorum stays in or not, is now basically irrelevant and Mitt has a lot of ground to make up. I’m confident he can make it up, but every day that goes by that he’s not in the general campaign is a day lost.
Sen. John McCain • Offering a tough take on Rick Santourm, suggesting that by staying in, he’s severely hurting Romney’s general election campaign. McCain also thinks that Romney’s doing poor in favorability rankings largely because the campaign has been so bitter.
