While it seems that Mitt would say and do anything to close a deal – or an election. George Romney’s strength as a politician and public officeholder was his ability and determination to develop and hold consistent policy positions over his life.Former George Romney aide Walter De Vries • Criticizing George’s son, Mitt, for what he sees as the biggest difference between father and son — George stuck to his guns, but Mitt switches views based on what’s politically convenient. The New York Times has a letter to this effect from De Vries. Want to know more about the differences between Mitt and George? I believe that my duty is to follow my conscience and vote what I think is in the best interest of the country, and the political risks will have to abide.Sen. Arlen Specter • On his decision to switch parties and support the Affordable Care Act, a switch he made in 2009 amidst controversy. The change cost him another term in the Senate — he lost a challenge to Rep. Joe Sestak in 2010, and Sestak lost to Pat Toomey in the general election. Specter managed to become the longest-serving senator in Pennsylvania history despite suffering numerous health problems — including two benign brain tumors in the 1990s, and two separate bouts of Hodgkin’s disease in the 2000s. Specter died of complications from non-Hodgkins lymphoma on Sunday.
Smart read of the morning: Author Kevin Baker, writing for The New York Times, makes a broad claim that the GOP’s biggest problem is that they’re trying to build their base without the city, despite their growing influence on American culture. “In short,” he writes, “they promise to rip and tear at the immensely complex fabric of city life while sneering at the entire ‘urban vision of dense housing and government transit.’ There is a terrible arrogance here that has ramifications well beyond the Republicans’ electoral prospects.” Now, whether you agree with that sentiment, this article is nonetheless a pretty great read, backed up by decades of historic context (the image above harkening back to “Ford to City: Drop Dead”). Great food for thought.
Mitt Romney Adopts New ‘Ronnie Ferocious’ Persona For Debates
“You know what? I’ll ask the first question,” the former Massachusetts governor said before putting out his cigarette on his forearm and flicking the butt at Lehrer. “What kind of little shit show do we have here this evening, folks? That’s my question. Because from where I’m standing, seems like a big ol’ shit show. And Lehrer, shut your fat mouth when Ronnie Ferocious is talking, or I’ll pound your goddamn face in.”
20 years ago, I became the luckiest man on Earth because Michelle Obama agreed to marry me.Barack Obama • Laying it on thick due to his poorly-timed anniversary.
Beer “Science”: We’re pretty sure we won’t be the only ones to look at this chart and think “Hey, that’s a load of crap!” That being said, considering its based on responses from previous political surveys, we can’t exactly say it has zero basis in reality. So where does the National Journal think you fall on the political spectrum, how accurate are they, or did they leave your favorite brew out entirely? source
Mitt Romney tries on a new outfit: Empathy for 100 percent of everyone. Somebody’s trying to flatter us!
Newton to the rescue: Embattled Missouri Senate Candidate Todd “Legitimate Rape” Akin may have been abandoned by the Republican establishment, but he’s not entirely without friends: Akin is getting an assist from failed presidential candidate and “Definer of Civilization“ Newt Gingrich, who will be attending a $500-a-plate fundraiser for Akin’s candidacy this Monday (Photo credit: AP). source
corysblog says: I really don’t see anything non-factual about this video. Everyone paying attention knows that the country’s vote is split pretty much half and half, but was Romney wrong for stating that fact? Isn’t it true that 47 percent of Americans people don’t pay income taxes and are more inclined vote for the President? If this video sinks Romney’s chance at the Presidency it will be because of the spin placed on it and not the actual content.
» Dave Weigel says: ”Romney is conflating the people who pay no net income tax with the people so dependent on government aid that they have to vote for Obama. But these aren’t the same people! Most of the ‘lucky duckies,’ to use the classic WSJ term, are old people who subsist on Social Security. Elderly voters broke big for Republicans in 2010. Scores of poor whites who benefit from the Earned Income Tax Credit vote for Republicans.” — Ernie @ SFB

Mr. Romney has made some of these points, and we would not expect him to re-argue them all, politics be damned; obviously a majority of Americans do not share our views on a number of them. But he should be presenting a broad, positive vision of how and where he would lead the United States in the world. If he thinks Mr. Obama is betting on and therefore accelerating the decline of U.S. leadership, don’t just call him nasty names (“Jimmy Carter,” for example), but explain to the American people why U.S. leadership is sustainable and necessary in the coming decades.
Instead, there have been too many cheap shots and miscues that have only called attention to Mr. Romney’s inexperience in foreign affairs. This week’s accusation that the Obama administration sympathizes with rioters called to mind Mr. Romney’s over-the-top attack in May when U.S. officials were in the midst of delicate negotiations in Beijing to win freedom for human rights lawyer Chen Guangcheng. “If these reports are true, this is a dark day for freedom and it’s a day of shame for the Obama administration,” Mr. Romney said, shortly before Mr. Chen flew to New York City.
His jeering at Russia has seemed unbecoming a great power (“Under my administration . . . Mr. Putin will see a little less flexibility and more backbone”), and his threats of a trade war with China are both unconvincing and unproductive. He appealed to the worst in the American people when he failed to stand up for religious tolerance by condemning the bigoted anti-Muslim movie trailer that incited riots this week, even as he rightly condemned the violence itself.
The Post suggests, instead, that Romney stick closer to saying things like this when discussing foreign policy issues: “The idea of using something that some people consider sacred and then parading that out a negative way is simply inappropriate and wrong. And I wish people wouldn’t do it.” Appeal to our best, not our worst. It’s not that hard, Mitt!
Joe flirted with the idea of running against Barack Obama. An ex–Florida congressman and a moderate Republican, he conferred with fellow centrists just before the primaries, occasionally shuttling around with his friend Mike Bloomberg. (From time to time, Mika’s father, Zbigniew, Jimmy Carter’s national-security adviser, weighed in with sage advice, as did a handful of George W. alumni.)

Joe could be a good choice. He’s a smart dude and knows a thing or two about reaching out to the other side — something the Republican Party (or even independent voters) might need if Romney loses in November.
In an electoral season marked by high levels of polarization, Republicans being vocal about their disdain for President Obama is beyond a norm — it’s fundamental to a broad campaign strategy. But, as go constituency attitudes, so must go the officials who’re seeking their votes. This is very evident in Massachusetts, where GOP Senator Scott Brown, fending off a challenge from Democrat Elizabeth Warren, is slated to run an ad today touting President Obama’s praise of Brown’s support of a bill against congressional insider trading. The predictable reason — Obama’s positive approval ratings in Massachusetts, and the centrist votes a Republican needs to win the traditionally blue state. (Photo by American Solutions) source
President Obama is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people. Romney and Ryan would do a much better job running the country, and that’s what everybody needs to know. I may have irritated a lot of the lefties, but I was aiming for people in the middle.Clint Eastwood • Reacting to the negative reaction (particularly from the left) his RNC speech drew. Eastwood spoke to his tiny local paper, the Carmel Pine Cone, in the first interview he gave since the speech. (Eastwood was once mayor of Carmel, Calif.) Regarding how Eastwood got away with such a strange speech, he made this claim: “They vett most of the people, but I told them, ‘You can’t do that with me, because I don’t know what I’m going to say.’” Turns out it involved talking to a chair.
WTF?
The incident would be ugly anywhere, but it is especially troubling for a party whose nominee attracted 0 percent of the black vote in a recent NBC poll.
In case you didn’t hear about this, this is perhaps the lowest point of the entire 2012 campaign.
