His headline: ”Sanitation Workers Forced to Wear Gas Masks to Remove Filth From #Occupy DC Squatters Camp (Video)” Not happy with the way my fairly objective video has been played. — Ernie @ SFB
Video of photojournalist Jerry Nelson being arrested Saturday, Feb 4, at Occupy DC as the camp was being dismantled. The officer says he was identified as someone who had assaulted another Occupier. In my discussions with occupiers and local journalists in DC, many knew Nelson and spoke highly of him.

Mr. Nelson describes himself this way on his Huffington Post bio: “Jerry Nelson is a nationally recognized photojournalist. His work has appeared in a wide variety of publicaitons [sic] and news outlets including USAToday, CNN, Upsurge, CBS, Dream Row, Earthwalkers and others. He photographs and licenses images for all manner of commercial and editorial use as well as selling through this website. When not traveling, he is available for portraits, events and concerts.”

Didn’t see anything like this when I was there, in terms of people getting arrested, but I could conceive this based on what I saw. Why did this guy get arrested? He doesn’t appear to be dangerous.
Here’s some video I shot of a six-minute period around and immediately after the moment the OccupyDC crowd got pushed out of McPherson Square by a group of cops on horses. The craziest part for me was when the police barricade got knocked over within a foot of where I was standing. Hope the video isn’t too shaky. — Ernie @ SFB
Went to McPherson Square today. Got a selection of photos from both before and after the OccupyDC group was evicted from the camp. Craziest Occupy-type-thing I’ve ever witnessed in person. Was able to get surprisingly close and got some interesting photos and videos, including a six-minute video from right when the Occupiers were kicked out of the park, which we’ll have up soon. (Side note: To the guy sitting outside of the Cosi around 6 p.m. talking on your phone about how much of a kick you were getting watching the “hippies” get kicked out of the camp: Consider yourself officially called out.) Anyway, enjoy these photos. We’ll have more stuff later.
Here’s a clip of sanitation workers loading Occupiers’ stuff onto a truck.
Occupy DC’s been facing an eviction all week, and said eviction started early this morning as tents got cleared out at McPherson Square and the Tent of Dreams got taken down. Six have been arrested in the pre-dawn raid, with police saying that the situation has been relatively peaceful but some Occupy protesters upset about the way things are being handled. “They want the park to be clear in the coming days, and they’re going to keep checking back so [protesters] can’t reestablish themselves,” said National Lawyers Guild member Ann Wilcox, who has been working as a lawyer for the group. We’re here because we got pushed out of New York, but we’re also here because this is the heart of where all politics happen. An Occupy Wall Street protester • Discussing why he made the move to one of D.C.’s two Occupy encampments. It appears the encampments stand a good chance of sticking around for a while longer, though — as the National Park Service considers the movement’s McPherson Square location a “24-hour vigil” and has applied the most liberal interpretation of the laws to the movement, and recently offered an extension of the permit for the Freedom Plaza encampment — which was initially supposed to end with the new year. So as a result, protesters who started hanging out at Zuccotti Park have started making their way to the encampments, which have recently passed the three-month mark. source (via • follow)
Occupy Congressional Offices: A variety of protest groups, including OurDC and OccupyDC, managed to make things fun and interesting at various Congressional offices today, most notably those of Mitch McConnell and John Boehner. For what it’s worth, Boehner’s spokesperson welcomed the protests: ”We respect their right to voice their opinions … The Speaker understands the American people want a government that listens to their concerns and works together to help create a better environment for job growth.”
Young child at #OccupyDC protest: The headline on this one is “Liberal Protester Uses Child As Human Shield,” which is unclear based on the video itself. What is clear is that there’s a 4-year-old girl in the middle of a protest, sitting in a wagon. And there’s commotion around the child. (On a side note: Who would do this?!) That trash can on the ground is a DC trash can and that guy on the left is likely a cop or security guard. (Edit: Uploaded a fresh version because the original was having problems.)
