Blame the David Gregory gun flap on crossed wires

situation On Sunday, “Meet the Press” host David Gregory discussed gun control with the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre. During the interview, Gregory pulled out an empty gun magazine for purposes of showing the audience at home.
claim He was in D.C., however, which has very strict gun control laws. The city claimed that they told NBC they could now do this, leading to an investigation of Gregory. People rolled their eyes or criticized Gregory for being stupid.
counterclaim However — and here’s the fun part — NBC asked the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives before the show if they could show ammunition or an empty magazine on air. The ATF asked the city, and based on info provided to them, told NBC it was OK to show an empty magazine. So basically, this all happened because someone screwed up somewhere. source

On Sunday, the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre showed up on "Meet the Press," where he didn't back down from his rhetoric during his press conference on Friday. More:

But if Mr. LaPierre had any intention of softening his rhetoric regarding the recent Sandy Hook grade school shooting in Connecticut – particularly in light of normally pro-gun pundits and elected officials distancing themselves from his adamant stance – that was not apparent Sunday when he sat down for an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“If it’s crazy to call for putting police in and securing our schools to protect our children, then call me crazy,” LaPierre told NBC’s David Gregory. “I think the American people think it’s crazy not to do it. It’s the one thing that would keep people safe and the NRA is going try to do that.”

Alright man, will do. Side note, FWIW: Then-president Bill Clinton tried the same thing in 2000, a year after Columbine, and drew heavy criticism from Republicans for the effort. Clearly, it wasn’t successful. (ht climateadaptation for that last bit)
