But the negotiations collapsed in acrimony because Gingrich and Santorum could not agree on who would get to be president. ‘In the end,’ Gingrich says, ‘it was just too hard to negotiate.’

Bloomberg Businessweek has a story about how Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich nearly ran for president together on a quote-unquote “Unity” ticket.

Hope that second to pick yourself up from fainting helped.

I am sorry that I will not be your president – but I will be your co-worker and I will work shoulder to shoulder alongside you. In the end, we’ll win for the same reason we’ve won before because our cause is just and it is right.
Mitt Romney, speaking at CPAC today. While he was respectfully received by the crowd, Politico writes that “indifference pervaded the halls” prior to his speech. source

msnbc:

“I’ll look at what’s happening right now, I wish I were there,” Mitt  Romney said of the ongoing sequestration battles in Washington. “It kills me not to be there, not to be in the White House doing what needs to be done. The president is the leader of the nation. The president brings people together, does the deals, does the trades, knocks the heads together; the president leads.”

Buck up, old fella. You’re sounding a little depressed these days. You know, there’s this thing called thought leadership that you could try. That’s what Rush and Palin try to do.

Heard there was going to be a sequester. Got prepared at CVS.

As a former Honey Nut Cheerios junkie I’ve never felt more closely aligned to Mitt Romney, the real Mitt Romney we’re only just now discovering

The trees are the right height.

Everyone knows that Honey Nut Cheerios are more expensive at CVS than they are at the grocery store. Mitt just doesn’t care. I admire that.

In case you were wondering what Mitt’s been up to since the election, Fox News did an interview with him. here’s a sample, above. ”We were on a roller coaster, exciting and thrilling, ups and downs. But the ride ends,” he told a captive Chris Wallace. “And then you get off. And it’s not like, oh, can’t we be on a roller coaster the rest of our life? It’s like, no, the ride’s over.” The full interview hits Sunday.

This is really an opportunity for Governor Romney to thank all his supporters and friends.
A senior aide to Mitt Romney, on Mitt’s upcoming speech at CPAC 2013, which we hope doesn’t get mixed up with his now-useless inauguration speech.

He wanted to be president less than anyone I’ve met in my life. He had no desire to … run. If he could have found someone else to take his place … he would have been ecstatic to step aside. He is a very private person who loves his family deeply and wants to be with them, but he has deep faith in God and he loves his country, but he doesn’t love the attention.
Tagg Romney • Discussing his father Mitt, who he had to convince with his mother, Ann, to run for president. Tagg made the comment in a long post-mortem article written by the Boston Globe’s Michael Kranish, which pinpoints what, exactly, happened. The biggest problem, according to the Globe report? The campaign did very little to focus on Romney’s personal and leadership strengths — and Obama’s campaign was much better at reaching individual voters than Romney’s. A great Sunday morning read.

I always hate this kind of scapegoating after elections. I mean, when you lose, you lost. Someone asked me the other day, ‘Why did Mitt Romney lose?’ Because he got less votes than Barack Obama. That’s why.
NJ Gov. Chris Christie • Discussing his displeasure with the mental gymnastics that both parties frequently display, after losing an election, in an interview with Joe Scarborough on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’. Gov. Christie has become the most recent prominent Republican to publicly dismiss Mitt Romney’s theory that “gifts” won President Obama the election, though he’s far from the only one to do so. source

Kicking while he’s out: Someone managed to put together a real-time graphic showing the decline of Mitt Romney’s Facebook Like count since he lost the election on Tuesday. In the past four and a half hours, he’s lost 2,500 fans — though it’s possible that some of them are spam accounts. The creator of the visualization better hope Romney doesn’t get a gig on “Dancing With the Stars.” (ht Hacker News)

  • Sen. John Cornyn ”[W]e have a period of reflection and recalibration ahead for the Republican Party.  While some will want to blame one wing of the party over the other, the reality is candidates from all corners of our GOP lost tonight.” source
  • Matt Lewis ”It is the job of politicians and parties and movements to persuade Americans to buy into their vision. And they clearly aren’t buying what Republicans are selling. It’s time for the GOP to do some serious soul searching…The GOP shouldn’t abandon its core principles, but it’s time for some reinvention. An obvious place to start is with demographics. For example, as I have long advocated, Republicans simply must find a way to appeal to Hispanics.” source
  • David Frum ”Any idea that the immigration issue - and the immigration issue alone - would enable Republicans to staple a good chunk of the Latino vote to the conservative coalition - without changing anything else - is a dangerous self-deception…the crying need in the GOP is for a more middle-class orientation to politics, one that addresses concerns like healthcare as well as debts and deficits. But the ideas that dominated the past four years won’t become more attractive if all conservatives do is translate them into Spanish.” source
  • Erick Erickson “The GOP spent a ton of money through a bunch of organizations, including Super PACs, that was flat out wasted. The Newt Gingrich Super PAC was just a sign of things to come it seems…There must be a reckoning for how the GOP does business with groups that fundraise off the names of politicians and use all the money for overhead that includes luxurious travel and hotels.” source
