Clothing company will raise wages for thousands of employees

  • $10 will be the new minimum hourly wage for all Gap employees, according to an open letter that was published by the company on Wednesday. The jump will happen in stages, raising to $9 an hour later this year before moving up to $10 per work hour sometime in 2015.
  • 65k people will benefit from the decision, including employees at the company’s various Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy locations around the US. In its announcement, the company stressed the decision was purely economic in nature, with CEO Glenn Murphy saying, “this is not a political issue. Our decision to invest in frontline employees will directly support our business, and is one that we expect to deliver a return many times over.” source

Stuff you may have missed: February 18, 2014

According to the CBO, a minimum wage increase to $10.10 would cost half a million people their jobs … but on the other hand, another 900,000 people would jump above the poverty limit. The White House isn’t happy with this math.

The situation in Ukraine, already quite violent, translated to one of the country’s deadliest days ever on Tuesday. What’s causing the unrest? Here’s a quick explainer from NBC News.

Why you should always read the fine print: Capital One’s new cardholder contract says that the company can pay you a personal visit if necessary. Oops.

President Obama is expected to announce an executive order that would circumvent Congress to raise the minimum wage of federal employees, from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour, during Tuesday night’s State of the Union address. The order will reportedly be part of a larger pledge from President Obama to seek change that doesn’t require help/approval from Congress, Speaker of the House John Boehner says Republicans won’t take action against the pay raise, but warned that any further attempts to encroach on Congress’ turf would be met with legal action. (Photo via State of Maryland) source

Want to keep Walmart out of your city? It seems passage of a so-called “living wage” law is pretty much all it takes to chase the 24-hour retailer out of town. Walmart officials have threatened to cancel plans to build several new stores in Washington D.C., should the city council pass a new law that would see the local minimum wage rise from $8.25 to $12.50. The vote passed an early vote last month 8 to 5, but proponents of the new legislation will need to convince at least one more council member to vote in favor of the bill to override an expected veto from Mayor Vincent Gray. (Photo via Walmart) source
Update: The bill has been approved, by the same 8-5 vote as before, though there’s been no response from Walmart or Mayor Vincent Gray at this time.

San Francisco’s new minimum wage sets the double-digit standard

  • $10.24 San Francisco’s new minimum wage source

» Happy New Year, indeed. Starting Jan. 1, San Francisco’s minimum hourly wage will jump above the $10 mark for the first time. That’s about $3 higher than the federal minimum wage and higher than anywhere else in the country, due to the fact that the progressive city ties its minimum wage to inflation and the quite-high cost of living in the area. But with wage hikes, various fees and the sagging economy, employers might have to start laying off workers again to keep up.
