The Geography of America’s Music Scenes

Numerous U.S. cities have staked claims as leading music centers. Seattle had its grunge, Chicago has electric blues, and Nashville its twang. Detroit was the birthplace of both Motown and the hard-edge distorted indie rock of The White Stripes. Austin has Stevie Ray Vaughn, Willie Nelson, and a host of legendary singer-songwriters. Then there’s of course New Orleans jazz, brass, and funk; San Francisco’s psychedelic sound; and the reverb-soaked rockabilly that is inextricably associated with Memphis’s Sun Records.

The surprise to us: Kalamazoo’s music scene is apparently very strong.

A map of the proposed Keystone XL, also called Tar Sands, pipeline.
It could carry crude oil some 1,700 miles from Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf Coast in Texas.
A friendly and safe new source of oil for the U.S. or an environmental disaster waiting to happen?

For anybody curious what exactly is being proposed when you hear the name “Keystone XL,” here’s the route it would chart. James Hansen, the climatologist and head of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, was arrested today during the protests against the pipeline plan outside the White House (so was Daryl Hannah, for that matter).

The probability of storm surges in your area from Hurricane Irene.

Based on this map, Hampton Roads and the Outer Banks are probably gonna get slammed, parts of DC and Baltimore might get hit with storm surges, and there’s a good chance NYC will probably feel the pain, too.

Graphics show some perspective on the border issue raised by Obama. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has issued a public rebuke to Barack Obama’s face, telling the US president his proposed border for the Jewish state would be “indefensible” and not based on reality. On begs the question how two states can come out of the current boarders?

We were looking for this graphic everywhere on the wires yesterday. Glad to see someone made it.
