Look, it’s not fair to pick on a single media outlet. I respect the fact that journalists have been lucky enough to keep their jobs in Seattle — during a recession — despite all this. But, this is a potential microcosm of what could happen to newspapers around the country, and we need to talk about this before another flailing big paper tries something similar.
I see what’s happened to the P-I in the past few years, and I worry that this is the model that newspapers — slowly looking to put the genie back in the bottle — are going to have to rely on.
My posts the other night about this ad inspired a Medium rant. I was tough, but fair (I think). Enjoy. — Ernie @ SFB
Spent a good 10 minutes laughing at this lineup of images last night.
The new look of NBC Local websites: NBC O&O stations were given a nifty little present Friday morning. The new NBC local websites (Chicago pictured above) have a cleaner layout, easier navigation and front-and-center content. The relaunch is designed to bring awareness to NBC’s new local content campaign, which includes The 20s. NBC owns local stations in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC and San Jose (serving the San Francisco Bay Area) as well as several other large markets.
This is very nice. I was just noting in a TBD-sorta-post-mortem that NBC O&O sites are really better at this kind of thing than anyone else, with TBD out of the picture.
» A message to TBD’s staff: We hear you’ll be able to work on your publication for the next few weeks as its model changes – a temporary respite from unemployment. As someone who’s been in that position before, I can tell you it’s a bit of a dead-man-walking situation. Sigh. These things are never fun. Make the best of them.
