Today in moves you didn’t see coming: Nike steps away from LiveStrong Foundation

  • 87M the number of wristbands the LiveStrong Foundation, through Nike, has handed out since 2005. The relationship with the cancer-fighting foundation, already fraught due to its ties with admitted doper Lance Armstrong, will end after this year, as Nike will stop producing new products for the line. “This news will prompt some to jump to negative conclusions about the foundation’s future,” said a statement from the foundation’s Katherine McLane. “We see things quite differently. We expected and planned for changes like this and are therefore in a good position to adjust swiftly and move forward with our patient-focused work.” source

This organization, its mission and its supporters are incredibly dear to my heart. Today therefore, to spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my cycling career, I will conclude my chairmanship.
Lance Armstrong • Resigning from his Livestrong charity’s chairmanship — in a shocking move that could further the scrutiny of Armstrong’s cycling career. Armstrong will remain on the charity’s board, but leadership will go to Jeff Garvey, who was the founding chairman in 1997. Armstrong is currently facing heavy scrutiny of doping during his cycling career — charges that have already cost him his titles.
