The New York Times’ Most Popular Story of 2013 Wasn’t an Article

The New York Times has released its list of most-visited stories of 2013. As The Atlantic’s business editor Derek Thompson noted, they include four breaking news articles, one of which was a map; three health stories; a long narrative about poverty in New York; and two celebrity op-eds.

What interests me most about the list, though, is what’s at the number one spot: A news interactive made by Josh Katz and Wilson Andrews called “How Y’all, Youse, and You Guys Talk.” It was one of many stories that news organizations published about dialect this year—The Atlantic made a video!—all inspired by a North Carolina State University dialect quiz, but it was, for the Times, the most-visited thing.

That’s cool and all, but the most interesting part? One of the creators of the graphic, Josh Katz, was an intern. An intern drew more traffic to the NYT than any of their writers. Think about that.

Wanted: Unpaid interns to work for free in the Senate. Oh yeah, it’s in DC, which isn’t cheap

  • 35 the number of Senate offices that pay their interns for the work they do, which they can do based on federal law. That said, if you’re looking to get a couple of bucks out of the gig, you better hope you’re working for a Republican—despite being the majority party, just 11 Democratic senators pay for your right to work for them—and 80 percent of Senate Democrats are asking for volunteers. source

Every intern’s worst nightmare is what’s called ‘the magic roundabout’, which is when you get a taxi to drive you home at 7am and then it waits for you while you shower and change and then takes you back to the office.
A financial-industry intern, speaking anonymously to the Evening Standard • Discussing the kind of crazy work hours that interns in the high-paced industry often find themselves working. The industry’s practices are getting fresh scrutiny after an intern in London died last week, apparently deprived of sleep for days on end, while doing one of these “magic roundabout” shifts. The intern, a German student named Moritz Erhardt, worked for Merrill Lynch.

Why it’s better to be a paid intern than an unpaid intern

  • 63% the percentage of paid internships that led to job offers for 2013 graduates, according to a study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). To compare, just 37 percent of unpaid internships led to full-time jobs. And those who received paid internships got paid more at their real jobs, too. “In each survey, paid interns exceeded their peers in job offers and starting salaries,” NACE’s executive director, Marilyn Mackes, said. source

Tumblr blog moves closer towards legitimacy with new intern

Yep, that’s us. We’re cool like that. Hello all! I’m Justin Jones, and I’m going into my sophomore year as a journalism major at the University of Florida. I’m interning with ShortFormBlog this summer, and I’m excited to learn a thing or two along the way. In my free time, I like to read news, argue politics and drink too much coffee with my friends at IHOP.  If you’re interested you can check out my personal tumblr and drop me a line.  source
