“There is something about Americans glancing up,” says Benjamin Lowy, who photographed attendees of the 57th Presidential Inauguration for NBC News on Monday. The upward glance seems to embody a hopeful gaze into the future, and it inspired similar portraits by Mr. Lowy during the Republican and Democratic National Conventions last year. “It doesn’t matter if we’re black, white, yellow, or brown,” he says. “We look the same when we look up.”

While we agree wholeheartedly about the power of tilting the head up a bit, the judicious use of sun is doing a lot of work here as well.

A lot happening in this tweet: First off, the New York Post decided Peter King taking a photo of Jay-Z and Beyonce was more important than the president getting inaugurated. Secondly, Peter King is taking a camera phone pic of Jay-Z and Beyonce. Third up, Peter King doesn’t know who Jay-Z is.

The one this morning came from St. John’s, the church across Lafayette Park from the White House, where the first family went this morning on the chilly and overcast day of the public inauguration ceremonies:
“I’m honored and grateful that we have a chance to finish what we started. Our work begins today. Let’s go. -bo”
The president and his family arrived at St. John’s at 8:35 am EST.
The service ended at 9:39.

The tweets that are supposedly from Obama (as opposed to a member of his team) are all signed “-bo.” So, he can’t blame this one on his staffers.

Road Closures, Vehicle Restricted Areas for Inauguration
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service have institute the following vehicle access and parking restrictions for today’s Inauguration activities. You can download the full list (PDF) or the map above (PDF)
Advice for D.C. residents: If you have the day off from work and don’t like crowds, head to Bethesda and watch the ceremony from your laptop. And if you’re working today, things may be a little hectic on your traditional routes for getting around the city.
