Before Dr. Seuss heard a who, he saw his work saturate the advertising field. The above piece is from the National Broadcasting Company Brochure in 1940. The University of California, San Diego’s Mandeville Special Collections Library has an entire site dedicated to Seuss’ advertising work. Cool, eh? (ht WSJ)

What makes this U.S. map better than any other U.S. map? Attention to detail. The guy who designed it — a seasoned cartographer named David Imus — spent 6,000 hours of his own time building it. And according to other cartographers, it shows — from the shading to the typography on down. Neat.

This is why the NYT is worth the subscription: Laser-focus. This illustration probably only took half an hour to do, and most of that went into the cutouts, but that story and that headline mesh together perfectly. This is what good illustrators do. They find the heart of a story and pump some life into it.

Gaddafi illustration for TIME by Tim O’Brien.

A lot of great Gaddafi covers this week (see Bloomberg Businessweek and The Economist), but this one is easily the best. Some might disagree with us on that; the Businessweek one is pretty badass.
