The only reason we went into Iraq, I tell people now, is we were looking for somebody’s ass to kick. Afghanistan was too easy.
Oh great. A former Bush aide says in Peter Baker’s new book “Days of Fire: Bush and Cheney in the White House.”

That’s my Bush: Soon, we’ll have a third George Bush on the scene. George Prescott Garnica Bush, shown with his uncle George W. Bush, has raised $1.2 million as he plans to run for statewide office in Texas. (The current plan is that he’ll run for land commissioner next year, but hasn’t ruled out a more-high-profile run if the cards fall that way.) Some details on New George: You already know his dad, Jeb, but the Republican Party sees him as having appeal to Hispanic voters, as his mother, Columba Garnica Gallo, is from Mexico. He’s also been on the national stage before: As a child, he spoke at the 1988 and 1992 Republican National Conventions, and he campaigned for his uncle in 2000 and 2004, supporting the former president’s immigration policies. (Side note: His grandfather, George H.W. Bush, left the hospital today.)

Is there anything you can do? Yes, of course. Keep him and the family in your prayers. I am thinking heaven has not seen such a barrage of prayer intentions since ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’
George H.W. Bush’s aide, Jean Becker • Offering a fairly snarky-sounding response to the outpouring of concern that the former president received after reports that he was admitted to an intensive care unit. According to Becker’s email to Bush’s family and friends, here’s what happened: “He is 88 years old, he had a terrible case of bronchitis which then triggered a series of complications, partially brought on by the fact that he also has a form of Parkinson’s disease.” Becker said in the message that if Bush were writing, he “would ask me to tell you to please put the harps back in the closet.” So in other words, thanks for your concern, but the 88-year-old former president will be OK for now. source

producermatthew:

Remember the young students who read “My Pet Goat” with former President George W. Bush on September 11, 2001? They’re now juniors and seniors in high school, and they’re offering their thoughts on the events that placed them in the history books ten years ago. [AP]

Fascinating recollection of the strangest wrinkle of 9/11 — the “My Pet Goat” moment.

A little perspective on this whole deficit mess
This graph, courtesy of the New York Times, has been making the rounds today, and it’s worth examining. Note that health care reform, much-maligned by the right as deficit-killer, cost less than even the most inexpensive of George W. Bush’s policies (that policy being Medicare Part D). Note also that the Bush tax cuts alone added more to the deficit than all of President Obama’s new policies combined — and that’s including projected spending over the course of a theoretical second term.  source

It seems like only yesterday: It was 2004, and George W. Bush proposed a constitutional gay marriage ban in all fifty states as a reelection issue, under the supervision of his campaign manager Ken Mehlman. Now Mehlman is openly gay, Bush has said he has no interest in politics, and his daughter is cutting commercials for New Yorkers for Marriage Equality. Maybe things do have a way of working out in the end? source
