Conservative lobby One Million Moms’ campaign for Toys R Us to withdraw wedding issue from sale falls flat
I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And quite frankly, I don’t see much of a distinction beyond that.Vice President Joe Biden •
Well, that was dumb.
But if somehow even a guy like Carson has that kind of tired-ass weak-florist horseshit bouncing around his head, it might not be entirely unrelated to the fact that the gay press and GLAAD has given him more ink for 20 seconds of being a jackass than they’ve given me for 15 years of being an out gay man on TV.
And it’s not just me: there are tons- tons!- of out gay men and women doing great work in comedy clubs (James Adomian! Chip Pope!) and rock venues (Kill The Complex! Boheme! BEN FUCKING WISE!) and on the internet (I don’t even know where to start).
So, gay media and GLAAD: how’s about instead of trying to turn his volume down, you use your power and reach to help us crank ours up?
(PS: Worked with the guy for years. Not a homophobe. Just a knucklehead sometimes, like you and me.)

Ex-Rutgers student convicted in Tyler Clementi case apologizes for actions: “I’m very sorry about Tyler,” Dharun Ravi said about his former roommate, who committed suicide in 2010. Ravi says he “didn’t act out of hate, and I wasn’t uncomfortable with Tyler being gay,” but that he didn’t consider the effect his actions would have. source
People have come up to me and said it’s changed my whole life. They’ve told me it has made me feel good again and not like a second or third class citizen. I haven’t heard anyone come up to me saying that it’s hurt my own marriage.New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch • Discussing the efforts to repeal gay marriage in the state’s legislature, which legislators are expected to vote on soon. The legislation, sponsored by Republican state Rep. David Bates, would keep 1,906 current marriages legal but bar any future ones, limiting the definition of marriage between one man and one woman. Lynch has promised to veto any law outlawing gay marriage.
I ask my friends on the other side: If the victim is in a same-sex relationship, is the violence any less real, is the danger any less real because you happen to be gay or lesbian? I don’t think so.Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) • Expressing her dismay at pushback from Republicans over the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which resulted from new provisions included to protect the LGBTQ community. Senator Feinstein went on to say that, in her opinion, “to defeat this bill is almost to say ‘we don’t need to consider violence against women — it’s not an important issue.’ It is.” source (via • follow)
Ravi faces charges of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation and hindering apprehension. Prosecutors say he watched his roommate, Tyler Clementi, during an intimate moment with another man and wanted to expose Clementi as gay and intimidate him.
Several other people were in the room on Rutgers’ Busch campus when an incident of alleged spying occurred, including Cassandra Cicco, who lived across the hall from Ravi and Clementi. She shared a room with Molly Wei, who was also arrested in September 2010 but was admitted into a pre-trial probationary program in return for testifying against Ravi.
Cicco was in the room when Ravi, Wei and others allegedly activated a webcam in Ravi’s room from Wei’s computer across the hall, which showed them what was going on in Ravi’s room, where Clementi had a guest over.
“it came up for a split second, it was a quick video, we saw two males leaning against the bed making out,” Cicco said.
“We were all just like, ‘Oh okay, that happened,’ and that was the end of it,” Cicco said.
Clementi’s 2010 death helped spark a nationwide anti-bullying movement (the “It Gets Better” movement), whose impact is felt to this day.
A bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in Maryland was approved by the state Senate, which advanced a measure that narrowly cleared the House of Delegates last week.
The final vote by the state Senate ended a yearlong drama in Annapolis over the legislation, and marked the first time an East Coast state south of the Mason-Dixon line has supported gay nuptials.
With the vote, the measure moves to Gov. Martin O’Malley (D), who has said he will sign it.
Gov. Martin O’Malley is expected to sign the bill as soon as next week.
My friends, whether they be homosexual or not, know me, and they know that I’m not bigoted.Chris Christie • Regarding his recent veto of a bill that would have legalized gay marriage in New Jersey. Politicians who oppose marriage equality use this defense a lot, because hey, it’s easy to speak on behalf of your unnamed gay friends and say that they’re cool with your anti-gay marriage views. Any of Christie’s gay friends care to come forward and confirm this? source (via • follow)
I’ve never defined myself by anything other than my service, and my duty, and what we should all be judged on in life. We’ve all had relationships, as is clear as day now — now this is national news — that I have had one where he wanted to harm me. And now this is rolled out, and the timing is more than a coincidence.Pinal County, Ariz. Sheriff Paul Babeu • On having to “out” himself in light of a personal scandal. The sheriff, currently running for a Republican Congressional seat in Arizona, had been dogged by rumors that he threatened to deport an ex-lover to Mexico if their relationship a secret wasn’t kept. In order to deny those rumors, Babeu held a press conference and, in turn, announced his sexuality. Babeu, a hard-line conservative who had been a rising GOP star prior to the scandal, recently spoke at CPAC, where he called his primary opponent, Rep. Paul Gosar ”most liberal Republican member of Congress.” Babeu thinks political rivals were behind the recent scandal. ”I’ve got a record of service. people know me. I want to be judged, as every American should be, on results,” Babeu said. Does Babeu stand a shot at getting elected in the wake of this news? source (via • follow)
Less than 24 hours after the state assembly sent a same-sex marriage bill to his desk New Jersey Governor Chris Christie followed through on his promise to veto the measure, and continued his call for a ballot question. In his veto, the governor cited a continued belief that citizens should decide whether or not to redefine the state’s legal definition of marriage, and included a proposal for the creation of an ombudsman to oversee compliance with the state’s existing civil union laws. Many say the existing laws are both flawed and discriminatory. State Senate President Steve Sweeney(D) condemned the move, saying that Governor Christie, “had a chance to do the right thing, and failed miserably.” (image courtesy of flickr user bobjagendorf) source
