Gabrielle Giffords to Senate on gun control: ‘You must act’
JUST IN: Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords addressed a U.S. Senate committee hearing on gun control, saying “speaking is difficult, but I need to say something important. Violence is a big problem. Too many children are dying. Too many children. We must do something.”
Giffords continued: “It will be hard, but the time is now. You must act. Be bold, be courageous. Americans are counting on you.”

The 24-year-old Loughner has been given 7 life sentences and 140 years in prison for killing 6 and injuring 13 in a shooting rampage last year. Giffords was shot in the head but survived; Loughner pled guilty three months ago to 19 federal charges and has no possibility of parole. source

Gabrielle Giffords resigns from Congress: DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a close friend of Giffords, had trouble holding back tears as she shares anecdotes about Giffords: “This is only a pause in that public service,” Schultz said. “and she will return one day.” Sometimes things are more important than politics.

Giffords says she will not return to Congress until she is “better.” But the way she jokes with her husband Mark, as well as with Diane Sawyer (whose hair she fixes), definitely shows that she’s far closer to “better” than anyone could’ve imagined.
