I said, ‘This thing is going to blow’ … and I told my mom and dad to get in the car. I was standing next to my car with my fiancee, waiting for my parents to come out and (the plant) exploded. It knocked us into the car… Every house within about four blocks is blown apart.
Bill Bohannan • Discussing the explosion he witnessed in the town of West, Texas, an explosion which appears to have injured dozens, including firefighters. Bohannan was visiting his parents, who live in the city, when the fertilizer plant exploded. A number of nearby buildings, including a nursing home, were evacuated.

Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?
The official White House response to the Death Star petition is pure comedy.

Two children, husband of missing woman die in explosion: This is not a good one. Josh Powell, the husband of missing Utah woman Susan Powell, died in his Graham, Wash. home with his two children inside. But the story gets weirder: Powell was supposed to have a supervised children with a Child Protective Services worker inside, but he wouldn’t let the social worker inside along with the children. The social worker smelled gas. Not long after, the home exploded. Powell was a person of interest in his wife’s 2009 disappearance, but has long denied playing a role in the case. However, he recently lost full custody of his children after having been arrested for voyeurism and possession of child pornography.

Cancer-stricken kid gets to blow up building: Now this is a Make-A-Wish we can totally get behind. Major props to 7-year-old “Mythbusters” fan Maxwell Hinton, currently recovering from Neuroblastoma, for knowing exactly what to ask for.

Suspected car bomb explodes on Michigan highway: In Monroe, about an hour south of Detroit, a car exploded on Interstate 75 last night, injuring a father and his two children. “I was looking to see if there were deer and saw the car come around and go boom,” said witness Edwin Holly. The ATF have put up a $10,000 reward for any clues leading to information about the bizarre incident. (photo by David Zewicky/Monroe Evening News)

This scene reminds us of a great line from the Simpsons. “Celebrate the independence of your nation by blowing up a small part of it!” Fortunately, the NYPD did that for us. You know, without blowing off our limbs or anything dangerous like that. (via Gawker) source

explosions heard in libyan capitol: For the first time since the Libyan rebellion began against Muammar Gaddafi, a series of explosions were heard in Tripoli during daylight hours. Reporting indicates there were three loud blasts, over the course of about twenty minutes. This comes amidst generally dire news for the Libyan rebellion, to say nothing of the citizenry; a witness tells CNN that a large scale butchery has gone on in Misrata, with Gaddafi’s forces killing civilians and driving them from their homes in a bid to claim control. source

Smoke rises from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan Saturday after an explosion at one of its buildings, blowing the roof off one building, brought down walls and caused a radiation leak of unspecified proportions.  The evacuation zone around Fukushima has been doubled to 12 miles in radius.  A government spokesman initially denied that an explosion had occurred — despite video evidence.  (Photo: NHK TV via APTN / The New York Times)
I think we should all be concerned at this point how the Japanese government is handling the situation at Fukushima.  It’s understandable that there may be some confusion just one day after a massive earthquake, but for Christ’s sake, you can’t have a government spokesman denying that an explosion happened when it fucking happened. And that’s after they told us everything was okay at the four nuke plants closest to the epicenter, when things clearly weren’t.
The International Atomic Energy Agency needs to take point on any and all news regarding Fukushima and the country’s other nuclear reactors.  The Japanese government just can’t be trusted anymore.

Well, this isn’t what we expected to wake up to. Good morning Japan.

It’s sometimes scary in Philadelphia. This clip is not the climatic scene from an awesome ’80s action flick. No, it’s a gas main explosion that killed at least one and severely injured three, according to Philadelphia Gas Works. The video says it all. source
