I kind of gave up a long time ago on making money making music. [The job] turned out to be the godsend of my life because I’d been living kinda hand-to-mouth, but I was finally making a gainful salary, had benefits…So I thought that was going to be my life, and music was pretty much going to be a hobby.
R&B singer Wanz • Discussing how, after decades of struggles with the music industry, he had given up on his dreams of fame to become a full-time software test engineer … only to have those dreams show up anyway, with the help of the hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. The duo had Wanz sing the hook on their hit “Thrift Shop,” and at the age of 51, Wanz, known to his family as Michael Wansley, has a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 under his belt. He’s now working on music full-time.
