The bipartisan cooperation that produced these bills sets an example for Washington to follow, and it makes clear that the Senate’s new majority coalition is capable of working with the Assembly and delivering results for New York State.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg • Speaking on the sweeping new gun control legislation passed in New York State today. The law requires background checks for all gun sales, including private sales, in stark contrast to many states which still allow for completely unregulated person-to-person sales (often referred to as the “gun show loophole”). It also classifies a large capacity magazine as any which holds in excess of seven bullets — the previous limit was ten — and ammo sales will also be privy to background checks, with sellers having to report especially large purchases to law enforcement. Governor Cuomo won enough state GOP support for the bill by including harsher sentences for some gun crimes, including mandatory life sentencing for the murder of first responders. The NRA has condemned the law as “draconian,” and promised to consider all possible legal options to combat it. source
