“Tracey and Dan’s Craigslist ad was the second thing that came up in the search,” said Tammy. “I was able to call them up and talk to them in secret without needing outside sources or having to drive anywhere.”
“The Internet has changed everything about adoption,” said Denise Bierly, President of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys. “We will never go back to what it used to be.”

What do Craigslist and Apple have in common? Besides coming down heavy with the lawsuits of late, both are now using OpenStreetMap — after spurning competition (in Apple’s case, Google; in Craigslist’s case, PadMapper) that used alternate mapping systems. Interesting.

Gizmodo, offered interview with Craigslist founder, ignores recent controversies entirely
Remember that time Gizmodo interviewed the Craigslist guy and asked him about the company’s controversial changes regarding user ownership of content (which were eventually, and quietly, revoked), and their ongoing legal fight against Padmapper? Us neither. Dudes, you had him on the line — days after your sister site wrote a brutal assessment of the service — and you wrote a puff piece. What the heck? Sure, it’s great that he does all this nonprofit work, but what happened to the idea of holding someone’s feet to the fire?

Clicking ‘Continue’ confirms that craigslist is the exclusive licensee of this content, with the exclusive right to enforce copyrights against anyone copying, republishing, distributing or preparing derivative works without its consent.
A provision on Craigslist • Giving them exclusive rights to your advertising. Recently, the company moved this message to a more prominent position on the site, so that people would see it. The company is currently locked in a battle with two companies, Padmapper and 3Taps, over its usage of content in an API format. Raise your hand if this makes you less likely to post on Craigslist.

PadMapper still has a lot of other sources, I’ll be adding more, and I’ll keep mapping pads, but it’s a sad day for pad mapping and apartment hunting. Craigslist is a really important source of apartment listings, and I hope we can get it back someday.
PadMapper founder and CEO Eric DeMenthon • Discussing the recent cease-and-desist order he received from Craigslist. His site, which effectively made searching for apartments on Craigslist and elsewhere much easier by pinpointing locations on a map, ran afoul of Craigslist’s terms of service, which prevents sites from scraping Craigslist’s content, even if it improves the site’s own offering. Craigslist, the market leader, has famously been averse to changes, even changes created by outside companies using their data, and unlike many sites of its nature, has refused to create an API to easily allow for mashups such as this one. Think Craigslist will ever change?

Note to NYC Craigslist users: Hurry up or you might miss out on the opportunity to be Bosom Buddies with a Tom Hanks lookalike. No clue what ”full experience” means but maybe he turns into Forrest Gump at the end of the night?! Possibly.

I’m a Marine and I’m not going to run from a fight. You wouldn’t want a Marine to run from a fight. Call me crazy, call me stupid. I got shot once and it just angered me more. I wanted to get this guy. I got shot twice, and I re-evaluated that decision. I decided I need to stay alive.
Florida-based Marine vet Lt. Col Karl Trenker • Discussing how he got shot, days before Christmas, in a Craigslist-transaction-gone-bad. The Iraq and Afghanistan vet’s fiance tried selling a man’s gold-chain necklace, but Trenker offered to make the transaction due to safety concerns, which turned out to be correct, as the alleged buyer picked up the necklace and ran. Trenker ran after the man, known only as “Galven,” only to get shot twice. Here’s the dramatic part: Following his training as a Marine (29 years experience), he plugged the bullet holes with his fingers, a move which likely saved his life. Say what you will about the Craigslist transaction (it certainly wasn’t the best idea), but that’s pretty amazing, no matter how you look at the situation. source (viafollow)

  • offer An ad looking for farmhands around northeast Ohio drew intrest from a handful of people. One described the ad as a “good offer but strange.”
  • problem The area listed in the sketchy ad did not actually have a farm; instead, the property is owned by a coal-mining company that often rents it out to hunters. Hmm …
  • reality Whoever put up the ad tried to rob and kill the unsuspecting victims. At least two people were found dead; another got away. Two suspects are in custody. source

Weird Craigslist job description of the day: Wanted – one Etch-A-Sketch doodler available for freelance work. Must be willing to create 200 “place cards” using miniature Etch-A-Sketches for a major arts conference. Must be willing to do tedious things for the next month and a half. Must have liberal definition of “art.” Must have very specific strength in turning knobs – emphasized through years of practice with devices such as stereos and car radios. No shakiness allowed. No carpal tunnel – your knuckles must be limber and undamaged by arthritis. Must be willing to agree to insanely complicated task on the hopes that the prestige is enough to make you feel that you haven’t wasted your time. Hey, it’s the recession! Jobs are hard to come by!

  • yeah … When you think of a story about an actress snatching a baby from its mother, you think of Madonna going to some random third-world country ready to cherry-pick her next family member.
  • … but This time, the case involved an aspiring actress who placed an ad on Craigslist casting for a Bollywood movie in Toronto, and then took some poor mother’s infant. What the hell, lady? source
