Street Legal Batmobile: Team Galag, a group of racers who all hail from Saudi Arabia, will be entering their to-scale Batmobile (seen above) in this year’s Gumball 3000. A win seems virtually impossible, given the nature of the race and the Batmobile’s top speed of 100 mph, but that doesn’t seem to be making us any less jealous. source

An interesting read from The Atlantic for anyone else tired of hearing about the State of the Union, Sen. Marco Rubio, or Christopher Jordan Dorner on what has turned out to be a rather slow news day.

  • 15k Raspberry Pi computers will be donated to British children by Google, and the first batch has already been hand delivered by Google’s Eric Schmidt and Raspberry Pi co-founder Eben Upton. For those thinking, “who cares,” let us put it another way — Google just donated the brains of 15,000 semi-functional R2-D2 units to some  lucky British kids. source

Even if you think that Cody Wilson should be allowed to move forward with the Wiki Weapon project, is anybody really surprised that the beginning stages of such a plan would involve cancelled leases and an ATF investigation? Honestly, we feel like he’s pretty lucky he didn’t get a knock on the door from Homeland Security (or any other federal agency for that matter) until he started asking questions of his own. source

Ocean Exploration: Google has released a new collection of panoramic underwater images, powered by Street View, created with high quality photos provided by The Catlin Seaview Survey. Only a few locations have been added at this time, though Google says they’ll continue to update the Ocean collection with new underwater panoramas on a regular basis. So, what do you think? (Photo via Google Maps) source

What happened: Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, better known as comedy-rock duo Flight of the Conchords, have been keeping a relatively low profile since the second season of their eponymous HBO show came to an end in March 2009. However, the two recently came out of hiding to do their part for the Red Nose Day: Comedy for Cure Kids event. The pair debuted a new charity single, created with help from enterprising young children and some of New Zealand’s top musical acts, and all proceeds will go directly to Cure Kids. Check out the video — don’t worry, it’s work safe — or head over to iTunes to buy the songsource

Freedom of Information Act request filed for President’s beer recipe
After President Obama publicly debuted the White House’s home-brewed honey ale — aptly named White House Honey Ale — at a campaign stop last month, reporters and home-brewers alike have begged for details on the recipe. After a campaign on the White House’s “We The People” petition website failed, a Reddit user decided to take a more direct approach. Pictured above is an excerpt from a request filed under the Freedom of Information Act, asking that the White House release the recipe to a home-brewer with non-commercial ambitions. Do you think it’ll work? (Photo via Reddit user imatexasda) source

Custom controllers: Using a single wire placed in the soil of a potted plant — doesn’t matter whether it’s live or artificial — Disney Research has created the Botanicus Interacticus system. Through the wire, the Botanicus software can detect where/how someone is touching the plant, strokes across the plants body, or even a person’s proximity to the plant in question. The new tech is currently being displayed at the SIGGRAPH 2012 computer graphics convention in Los Angeles. Excuse us while we try to get over how weird this video is. (ht to The Verge) source

Ahead of the Mars Curiosity Rover’s planned landing next week, NASA has released a new introductory video featuring narration from William Shatner and Wil Wheaton. The four-minute video explains the steps involved in the gigantic rover’s landing, and what NASA hopes to accomplish during Curiosity’s time on Mars. The Wheaton-narrated version of the video can be found here.  (Video via CoconutScienceLab) source

  • $500 was given to the waiter at an Italian restaurant by the family of Aaron Collins, after he asked his family to leave a waiter an “awesome tip” on his deathbed; they asked for donations via Facebook, and posted a video of the experience on YouTube
  • $47,680 has been donated in the weeks since the story broke — enough to give $500 to 95 more waiters/waitresses; the Collins family also launched “Aaron’s Wish,” a blog with weekly updates on their efforts to continue fulfilling Aaron’s final wish source
