Republicans have to stop buying into things that demonize the president. I mean, why aren’t Republican leaders shouting out about all this birther nonsense and all these other things? They should speak out. This is the kind of intolerance that I’ve been talking about where these idiot presentations continue to be made and you don’t see the senior leadership of the party say, ‘No, that’s wrong.’ In fact, sometimes by not speaking out, they’re encouraging it. And the base keeps buying the stuff.
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell • Criticizing unidentified members of the Republican Party during a Monday night appearance on ABC News. The registered Republican, who some have started calling a RINO (Republican In Name Only) after he voted for President Obama in 2008 and 2012, has repeatedly criticized the fringe elements of his party in recent days, though Powell has continued to insist that he simply wants to see his party grow. Powell also spoke out against what he perceived to be Republican efforts to intentionally lower voter turnout in places where Republican candidates were not polling well during a Monday morning appearance on MSNBC. source

thedailywhat:

In which Wolf Blitzer, of all people, schools Donald Trump on the air over his position on birtherism. An excerpt:

WB: Donald, you’re beginning to sound a little ridiculous, I have to tell you.

DT: You are, Wolf. Let me tell you something, I think you sound ridiculous, and if you’d ask me a question and let me answer it.

WB: Here’s the question, did the conspiracy start in 1961 where theHonolulu Star-Bulletin and the Advertiser contemporaneously published announcements that he was born in Hawaii?

DT: Many people put those announcements in because they wanted to get the benefit because of getting so-called born in this country. Many people did it. It was something done by many people even though they weren’t born in the country. You know and I know it.

Long done with this issue, admittedly, but there’s a great laugh-out-loud moment six minutes in where Wolf asks Trump what “his people” found about Obama’s birth certificate back in April of last year — he claimed to Meredith Viera that his people “cannot believe what they’re finding” about Obama’s birth certificate. “We don’t have to go into OLD NEWS,” Trump says. “That’s old news.”

Obama campaign courts cash off of birth certificate flap
“With Donald Trump abandoning his presidential ambitions, the “birther” conspiracy theory lost one of its most prominent voices. But now an unlikely group is looking to keep birtherism in the conversation: President Obama’s reelection campaign.A fundraising e-mail sent to supporters Wednesday morning offers up—for the donation of $25 or more—a “Made in the USA” T-shirt, featuring a picture of the president on the front and an image of his recently released long-form birth certificate on the back—a tweak at those who think Obama was not born in the United States and therefore not eligible to be president.
“Last year, the president said, ‘I can’t spend all of my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead,’” writes deputy campaign manager Julianna Smoot. “This is about as close as we can get.”The bid to raise money off of birtherism also needles author Jerome Corsi, whose book “Where’s the Birth Certificate?” was released Tuesday, a top seller on Amazon.com despite the fact the White House released a copy of the long-form birth certificate three weeks ago.“There’s really no way to make this stuff completely go away,” the Wednesday email reads. “The only thing we can do is laugh at it — and make sure as many other people as possible are in on the joke.””—LATIMES

The shirt says “Made in the USA” but the tag on the shirt probably says “Made in China,” leading to a whole new generation of conspiracy theorists we like to call Taggers.

  • cause At last night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, both Barack Obama and Seth Meyers scored some ice cold burns on Donald Trump — while he was in the room, grimacing.
  • effect This morning, Trump called the comments “inappropriate” and tried to redirect things to political issues. WAIT. Now you wanna talk issues all of a sudden, Sideshow Don? Too late, brah. source

President Obama’s decision to release his long-form birth certificate is a reminder of the handicaps under which rational people labor when confronting the irrational.
Wendy Kaminer at The Atlantic • Giving us some perspective on this birth certificate madness. Obama has both reason and empirical evidence on his side, but those are useless against an opponent who rejects reason and empiricism. source (viafollow)

So here it is, President Obama’s long-form birth certificate, which was released by the White House this morning. Will it be enough to silence the “birthers” who claim the president wasn’t born in the United States? » Follow all things Obama with Trove’s Barack Obama channel.

That’s what it looks like, guys. Now get off this story and never talk about it again.
