  • DOJ A couple weeks ago, it was announced that the Department of Justice would sue the police department headed by Maricopa County, Ariz. Sheriff Joe Arpaio, whose practices were seen as abusive towards Latino inmates. It’s the second such investigation his office has faced.
  • Sheriff Joe Meanwhile, Sheriff Joe Arpaio is, over a year after Obama released his birth certificate, spending taxpayer dollars on a deputy who will focus on the cold case of whether or not Obama was born in Hawaii. ”It’s one deputy, so what? We have security issues, too, that I can’t got into,” Arpaio said. source

To help the president of the United States, let’s go to the microfiche. All you have to do if you’re the president is go to the Department of Health, or whatever, and release the microfiche.
Maricopa, AZ’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio • Taking birtherism to a dizzying, inane new height. We especially like how he couches it - “to help” President Obama. Arpaio has also formed what he referred to as a “posse” to investigate the President’s entirely well understood birth, and at a Tea Party Rally last month he said “…there could be a shock there somewhere that my guys came up with. I can’t talk too much about it. It’s in the process.” Just like Donald Trump’s investigators in Hawaii, huh? source (viafollow)

Rick Perry: Trump not sold on Obama’s birth certificate
Say it ain’t so, Rick!  The Texas governor and presidential candidate recently told Parade Magazine that he dined with Donald Trump, and that Trump didn’t believe President Obama’s birth certificate was genuine. When pressed for his own opinion, Perry said he had “no reason to think otherwise… I don’t have any idea. It doesn’t matter. He’s the president of the United States. He’s elected. It’s a distractive issue.” (Photo by Gage Skidmore)source

… I feel more of an affinity for America than I do for Africa. I’m a black man in America. Barack Obama is more of an international. … he was raised in Kenya, his mother was white from Kansas and her family had an influence on him, it’s true, but his dad was Kenyan, and when he was going to school he got a lot of fellowships, scholarships… He spent most of his career as an intellectual.
GOP Presidential candidate Herman Cain • Speaking to The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, in an interview he wrote for Bloomberg View. Goldberg, to his credit, corrected Cain that President Obama spent some years of his childhood in Indonesia, not Kenya, to which Cain replied, “Yeah, Indonesia.” Whether this was a sincere mistake or not is impossible to say, and frankly doesn’t entirely matter — Cain is trying to paint Obama as mysterious and foreign, as opposed to himself, an American black man who rejects the term “African-American.” He also throws in some anti-intellectualism for good measure, but really, the story here is his stoking of, if not birtherism, the core belief that allowed that rumor to spread — he ain’t one of us. In trying to seize momentum with his recent, strident remarks, Cain’s campaign slogan could easily share a title with a classic 80s film — “Say Anything.” source (viafollow)

Donald Trump calls for truce: “We should spend the next several days not debating party politics, but in remembrance of those who lost their lives on 9/11 and those currently fighting for our freedom. God Bless America!” Today in how a single act pretty much took all the thunder out of Trump’s sideshow. Wondrous.

  • Letterman’s lashing out On a Thursday night episode of “The Late Show with David Letterman,” the host ripped into one of Trump’s friends, Dr. Phil, over Trump’s behavior in recent weeks. ”It’s all fun, it’s all a circus, it’s all a rodeo, until it starts to smack of racism. And then it’s no longer fun,” he said. Letterman also noted that they may not bring Trump back on the show as a guest in the future over the birther stuff.
  • Seinfeld’s Charity drop-out The incident mirrors a recent decision by Jerry Seinfeld to not take part in a Trump-sponsored charity event. Rather than handle the real issue at hand, Trump went after Seinfeld’s admittedly terrible “The Marriage Ref.” “What I do feel badly about is that I agreed to do, and did, your failed show, ‘The Marriage Ref,’” he wrote, “even though I thought it was absolutely terrible.” Damn brah. source

What Obama did here is a really important thing. Not him validating that whole birth certificate drama. Instead, he separated what he’s trying to do from the spectacle around what he’s trying to do. And as a result, he should be able to get beyond the stupid drama and do what he’s been trying to do for over two years — improve our economy. For too long, Obama’s become less about his own goals and efforts and more about the people looking for any way possible to cut them down. And by making his statement today, he drew a line in the sand. If you jerks are going to continue to talk about this, you’re doing so at the peril of the American people. And that’s what we needed to hear as a country and as a media. Thank God someone said it. source

So here it is, President Obama’s long-form birth certificate, which was released by the White House this morning. Will it be enough to silence the “birthers” who claim the president wasn’t born in the United States? » Follow all things Obama with Trove’s Barack Obama channel.

That’s what it looks like, guys. Now get off this story and never talk about it again.

I won’t mention names, but certain people in the news the last couple weeks, just, what are they doing? It’s crazy. They’re making statements about people that they don’t even back up. Go get the facts before you start saying things about people.
Robert De Niro • Saying the kind of “no shit, sherlock” thing that somebody somewhere needed to say about the political sphere in recent weeks. Unfortunately … Donald Trump inferred it was about him. On Fox and Friends today, Trump had this to say: ”When I watch him doing interviews and various other things, we are not dealing with Albert Einstein. He can say what he wants but the fact is this guy (Obama) has not revealed his birth certificate.” WAIT. STOP A SECOND. Robert De Niro (rightly) wants people to back up what they say in the press, and Donald Trump says he’s an idiot?!? Screw it. We give up. source (viafollow)

I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for President of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their ‘early baptismal or circumcision certificates’… this is a bridge too far. This measure creates significant new problems while failing to do anything constructive for Arizona.
Gov. Brewer Vetoes Birther Bill, Guns on Campus • Damn, didn’t expect that. (via paulbalcerak)

  • really? Donald Trump has employed a daring, if unscrupulous political strategy in courting the birther movement. Basically, he’s trading in whatever mainstream credibility he has to corner the market on a vociferous, single-issue base.
  • Orly! Orly Taitz, birther maven and former California Secretary of State candidate, endorsed Trump on her blog, calling him “THE PRESIDENT WE OUGHT TO HAVE NOW, ASAP.” As you can tell from the caps-lock, she’s deadly serious. source
