Donald Trump has placed himself in the middle of another controversy involving a birth certificate—this time his own.
In a letter obtained by Yahoo News, the real estate mogul and de facto leader of last year’s “birther” movement against President Barack Obama sent a copy of his New York City birth certificate to comedian Bill Maher, who earlier this week made a Trump-like demand to see it.
We hate to see charity being used as a tool for vengeance in a personal rivalry, but worse things could certainly happen than $5 million being donated to help those in need. Anybody else wishing Bill Maher hadn’t given Donald Trump an excuse to stick around in the spotlight?
In a surprise announcement made by the comedian and political commentator before Sunday night’s game against the Cardinals, Maher said that he purchased one of the reported 12 minority stakes available to investors over the winter.
“First of all, I think it’s a great investment,” Maher said. “People sometimes forget that there’s only one National League franchise in New York City and they’re not making anymore. I’m a Met fan my whole life and I think it would be a great place.”
Odds that Johan Santana’s no-hitter played a role in this: Even. And Bill, if you have some cash lying around, buy a second minority stake and give it to these guys.
Let’s have an amnesty — from the left and the right — on every made-up, fake, totally insincere, playacted hurt, insult, slight and affront. Let’s make this Sunday the National Day of No Outrage. One day a year when you will not find some tiny thing someone did or said and pretend you can barely continue functioning until they apologize. If that doesn’t work, what about this: If you see or hear something you don’t like in the media, just go on with your life. During his show on Friday, Maher claimed Santorum wanted his children “locked up in the Christian madrassa”, because in public “they could be infected by the virus of reason”. » But wait … isn’t that a conflict of interest? Granted, Maher, who leans on the liberal side but has called himself libertarian in the past, doesn’t exactly hide his political views, but considering he’s a commentator who regularly questions both sides of the aisle, you wonder if that crosses an ethical line. Then again, will his audience care? On the other hand, as the Christian Science Monitor points out, Maher tends to do better, comedy-wise, when there’s a Republican in office, so this might hurt him a little. By the way, Maher’s announcement, which came during a Yahoo webcast, was a bit of a shock to those in the audience, though Maher had fun with the announcement, mocking the name of the Super PAC he’s donating to.
