I have a soft spot for Joe Biden,” he said. “I like him. But he’s dumb as an ashtray.
Exclusive Excerpt: Roger Ailes Off Camera, Vanity Fair (via brooklynmutt)

In which Ailes simultaneously plays into his own image and Biden’s Onion-bestowed image.

“The fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing:” This morning, President Obama announced the formation of what’s essentially a gun control task force—a policy team tasked with crafting concrete proposals to reduce gun violence. The group will be headed by Vice President Biden, and its proposals will be due on the President’s desk “no later than January.” Obama emphatically rejected the notion that the team is a “commission;” he insisted that it will not “be studying the issue for six months and publishing a report that gets read and then pushed aside.” He also pledged to speak of the proposals, whatever they may be, in his State of the Union address next year.

  • Ace of Spaces HQ “Well, Biden gave the Chris Matthews and Maddow what they asked for — an MSNBC style debate.”
  • Weigel “Reading this transcript is going to be like scanning a David Mamet play. Biden never gave up the momentum he won in the first five minutes — he seems physically unable to let Ryan finish an answer, interrupting him as if he’s livetweeting to correct every factoid he dislikes. Whether or not this Biden performance helps Obama, you could sell bootleg DVDs of it to Dems for $20.”
  • Sully So this was a solid win for Biden, I’d say; as well as a competent performance by Ryan. The star? Raddatz - the woman the far right just tried to intimidate. She was tough on both, controlled the debate, and knew her shit cold. Sorry, Tucker. But you were pwned by a pro. One day, you may grow up to be a journalist half her caliber.”
  • Ebert I vote for Martha Raddatz to moderate all the debates.”
  • Hot Air “[Biden’s] task tonight was to get the left excited again after Obama fell into a semi-coma in Denver, and evincing utter disdain for Ryan — grimacing, shouting, laughing inappropriately, and constant, constant interruptions, the total jackhole experience — is just what the doctor ordered. He might have irritated independents and undecideds, but probably not so much that it’ll change people’s votes.”
  • Buzzfeed “The Vice Presidential debate appears unlikely to have the effect on the presidential campaign that Barack Obama’s stumbles last week did, and the performances were far more even. Ryan held his own where Obama failed. But Biden’s performance gave Democrats hungry for energy, punch, and emotional connection what they needed to end a week that had veered at times near panic.”

Now, your turn: What did you think?

The Onion’s Biden is absent. This is a calm, strong forensic refusal to accept any of the bullshit being delivered by the congressman. But he shouldn’t laugh at Ryan’s flim-flam. He should do what he just did: calmly, relentlessly expose it.
Meanwhile, Andrew Sullivan seems to have gotten a grip on his breakdown.

It was the first time in my career, my life, I realized someone could go out — and I probably shouldn’t say this with the press here, but — no, but it’s more important. You’re more important. For the first time in my life I understood how someone could consciously decide to commit suicide. Not because they were deranged, not because they were nuts; because they’d been to the top of the mountain and they just knew in their heart they’d never get there again, that it was never going to be that way ever again. That’s how an awful lot of you feel.
Vice President Joe Biden • Addressing a group associated with the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, which supports friends and families of service members who are killed in action. Biden’s wife and daughter were killed in a car accident in 1972, and he realizes how important this story could be to others. He notes that Jill, his current wife, really helped him through his tough times. “This woman literally saved my life,” Biden said. Things are looking more positive for Biden and his family these days: Just yesterday, their 30-year-old daughter, Ashley, was married. source (viafollow)

Vice President Joe Biden may not be the person you often turn to for tearjerker video, but we were struck by how incredibly honest and raw his remarks were yesterday to a gathering of Gold Star Military Families — those families of soldiers slain in America’s wars. Biden admitted, with an occasional tremor in his voice, that the deaths of his wife and daughter in 1978 made him understand how a person could “consciously decide to commit suicide,” and urged the families assembled to take care of one another. source

The single most significant thing we can do is have the best educated population in the world. It literally is the thing, the key that leads to everything else from our economic security to our physical security.
Vice President Joe Biden • Speaking at Florida State University about America’s education. Biden said in his speech that he wants to make education in America more affordable, citing his own experience with higher education, in which his father was initially denied for a loan. Biden ended up going anyway, eventually getting a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware, a law degree from Syracuse and a spot in the White House.  Biden says the Obama administration won’t waver from its goal of providing better education, while at the same time making it more affordable for more parts of society. Biden’s a bit up against it, though: His visit to Florida comes as the state legislature plans to vote on statewide tuition hikes. source (viafollow)
