We, the largely-bearded staff of SFB, are excited about this news. Also, Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn occasionally sports a beard; will this PAC support his reelection if he pinkie-promises not to shave it again? source
An Orthodox Jew who was weeks away from becoming a New York City police officer said he has been kicked out of the police academy for refusing to trim his beard.
Former recruit Fishel Litzman of Monsey, New York, was fired Friday after multiple confrontations with the department over the length of his whiskers, he told the Daily News.
Litzman is Hasidic and believes that cutting his beard is forbidden by God.
NYPD rules usually require officers to be clean-shaven. The department makes exceptions for beards kept for religious purposes, but even then only allows 1 millimeter worth of growth. Read more.
So, who’s in the right here? Should the city change its standards?
Rapper Matisyahu, the longtime Hasidic Jew who doubles as a reggae-tinged rapper, did something pretty crazy yesterday morning: He shaved his beard. This led to confusion and criticism over the decision, with many worried he left Judaism altogether. However, the rapper says that’s totally not the case: “For all of those who are being awesome, you are awesome. For all those who are confused: today I went to the Mikva and Shul just like yesterday.” For people curious about what Matisyahu looks like sans beard, there you go.
So, disregarding the stuff Tom Coburn is saying here (it’s pretty bad and can be refuted fairly easily by anyone who watches the news), we’d like to take a minute to note that Tom Coburn is the new Joe Miller. See, had Miller been elected, he would’ve been the only member of the Senate to rock a beard. But, since Miller blew that opportunity (and is still fighting the results in court for some reason), Coburn has taken up his mantle as the only Senator with a beard. And like Miller’s beard, Coburn’s also has a Twitter account. (thanks corruptpolitics) source
