Stuff you may have missed: December 27, 2013

We’re no closer to knowing the true motives for what Adam Lanza did to Sandy Hook Elementary School, but we do know, based on newly released documents, that he became increasingly despondent and uncaring towards the end of his life.

Alan Turing is having a great week: Not only was he posthumously pardoned recently (and with good reason), but fandom icon Benedict Cumberbatch is playing him in an upcoming movie.

Target says that the hack which led to the theft of 40 million card numbers also included encrypted pin numbers. Awesome.

Speaking of brands noted for their usage of the color red, let’s stick a fork in Red Lobster, shall we?

Did you know Rdio had a video service? Neither did we. Doesn’t matter; it’s gone now.

Report: Newtown shooter may have been inspired by Norway shooter

  • 2011 Norwegian Anders Behring Breivik drew international attention and anger over a mass killing spree that killed 77 people, mostly teenagers, and cast a pall for weeks after the shooting. He survived the shooting and was sentenced to at least 21 years in prison.
  • 2012 Newtown gunman Adam Lanza, whose motives were unknown in the months after the shooting, may have been inspired by Breivik’s own shooting, with some sources noting to CBS News that he may have chosen Sandy Hook because it was the closest target with a large number of people. Lanza may have left evidence showing he was reportedly “obsessed” with Breivik. source

» A caveat: Be careful not to overly lean on this speculation, however. After CBS published their story, they added this note: "In response to this piece, Lt. J. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police told CBS News that the investigation into the motive for the Newtown shooting has not been completed and therefore any statements about the shooter’s intent are mere speculation."

This is why getting the suspect’s name right is important. (FWIW, Ryan Lanza is in custody — for questioning — while Adam Lanza is the alleged suspect according to the Associated Press, though the Connecticut state police won’t confirm. He was found dead. The two had their names inverted in earlier reports. It is not clear if Ryan Lanza had a role or not.)
UPDATE: The AP reports that Ryan Lanza appears not to have a tie to the shooting. Which makes this point even more relevant.

Shooting suspect is Adam Lanza, not Ryan Lanza

So it looks like Adam Lanza is the suspect, not his brother, Ryan, as was earlier reported.
