It’s a banner week for White House petitions which deserve support. This one, which encourages the White House to classify the Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group, has the backing of Anonymous, which is actively trying to stop the church from picketing the funerals of Sandy Hook shooting victims. It’s already topped the 25,000 signature mark requiring the White House to formally respond.

Congress aims to overturn SCOTUS decision protecting Westboro protests
No More: Following a 2011 Supreme Court decision upholding the Westboro Baptist Church’s right to picket military funerals, Congress set to work on legislation to update regulations for such protests. Now, legislation headed to desk of President Obama will severely hamper protests like the ones that the WBC has become known for. In addition to addressing a variety of other veterans’ needs, the “Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012” prohibits demonstrations during funeral proceedings, as well as the 2 hours before and after. Demonstrators must also remain at least 300 feet from friends and family of the deceased at all times. (Photo via NoHoDamon) source

Nine-year-old stages a one-man anti-Westboro protest
Meet Josef Miles: While walking around the Washburn University campus with his mother, Josef noticed a group of protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church. After reading the group’s signs, Miles asked his mother if he could create his own sign. A sign featuring his thoughts on God’s worldview. With the approval of his mother, Patty Akrouche, Josef wrote “God Hates No One” on a notepad, crossed the street, and proceeded to spend a few minutes staging a protest of his own. Video of the day: The Foo Fighters haven’t been this funny since the days of “Big Me.” And for a good reason, too. The band performed a country parody called “Keep it Clean” — laden with homosexual overtones — in front of a Westboro Baptist Church protest at a Foo Fighters show. The band was wearing hilarious costumes. Pat Smear’s is the best by far. Lovely ditty, Foos. (via ProducerMatthew)

Artist paints anti-gay church leader in compromising position with Satan
Well, this is awesome: The delightful Westboro Baptist Church, best known for protesting the funerals of soldiers and screaming “God Hates Fags” at anyone who will listen, just got a taste of its own medicine. The man pictured above is New York artist Scott LoBaido. LoBaido traveled to the church’s headquarters in Topeka, Kansas last weekend, set up shop across the street, and proceded to paint the above work of art. In case you can’t tell, it’s an image of WBC founder Fred Phelps, wearing nothing but a pair of purple underwear, lovingly embracing the Devil, as his daughter (the equally-charming Shirley Phelps-Roper) gazes on in anticipation. The police tried to stop LoBaido, but as his creation clearly qualifies as art, the anti-picketing laws afforded to the church didn’t apply. LoBaido is a traveling artist who paints patriotic imagery around the United States. He blasted Lady Gaga while making this masterpiece (which he plans to auction off for charity on eBay), earning him a police citation for violating anti-noise laws. We think it was well-worth it. source

Just an update to our post on the potential Westboro Baptist Church site we noted last night — it appears to have been taken down. Whether that was by Tumblr staff or by the authors themselves remains to be seen. (EDIT: So was the page for Megan Phelps-Roeper. Which suggests Tumblr did it.)

Fresh off her Supreme Court win, the lawyer for Westboro (and Fred Phelps’ daughter) was on Fox News Sunday explaining her church’s protests to Chris Wallace. (Part one is above. Part two is over here.) OK, so they won their case, but does anyone else find this booking decision to be questionable? By our quick research, she doesn’t show up on TV all that often … the only other YouTube news clip we can find of her is one from C-SPAN from October. Phelps deserves a free-speech outlet, yes, but should News Corp. be the ones to offer said outlet? (For what it’s worth, Chris Wallace is way ahead of us on this question. He says the First Amendment issues are too important to ignore. Agree?)

  • what Despite their status as being particularly offensive and their strong advocacy of various political issues, the Westboro Baptist Church has managed to stay tax-exempt, despite their 501(c)(3)/nonprofit status preventing certain kinds of advocacy.
  • why They know the law really well – note that the church never advocates specifically against legislation, but against groups of people it doesn’t like. So while they may not fight Prop 8’s repeal, the Phelps family advocates against homosexuality in general. source
