  • 1983 Loaded with video games it can’t sell in the midst of a major video game crash which changed the face of the gaming industry and the company itself, Atari reportedly dumps several tons of games in a New Mexico landfill, including millions of copies of the infamously terrible E.T. video game for the Atari 2600. The story gains the whiff of urban legend, as some doubt the scope of the dump.
  • 2013 Earlier this week, Fuel Industries, a game developer and video production company, got permission to excavate the abandoned landfill, based in Alamogordo, New Mexico, for purposes of filming a documentary. Who knows what they’ll find, but it sounds like fun. (via Hacker News) source

Make squares. Just make them. There is no other Dots strategy.
Quartz writer Zachary M. Seward • Describing the best strategy to play Dots, the absurdly addictive puzzle game that’s currently kicking ass and taking names on the iTunes charts. One other tip on the game: “Reset the game until you’ve got a good opening board. Is there already a square for the taking? A few near-square formations? Is the board heavily concentrated with a few colors? No? Tap the time or score at the top of your screen, and select ‘restart.’” One other piece of advice from me: Don’t download this game because you’ll be playing it while walking and will get hit by a car. It’s that addictive. (via @topherchris)

Watergate: The Video Game

mediareporter:

Journalists: It’s the game you’ve always wanted to play. Forget finding Carmen Sandiego. In Watergate: The Video Game, you’re on the hunt to expose Richard Nixon’s corruption. Here, the real sleuthing happens through interviews, document acquisition and hard-hitting reporting. This is the best way to celebrate the Pulitzer Prize that the Washington Post received 40 years ago today for its coverage of the Watergate scandal.

FJP: I like the 8-bit glory of it all. — Michael

If we’re a little bleary-eyed tomorrow, it’s because we’ve spent all night investigating Watergate.

If you hit “no”, you’re resigned to listening to the police scanner for the rest of your life.

  • $232M in profits were generated by Minecraft last year, but Mojang’s founders aren’t looking to go public any time soon according to a new Reuters report. Apparently, despite Notch’s $100 million windfall, these guys want to keep doing what they love without having to answer to new bosses, a major publisher, or outside investors. You can officially consider us jealous.  source

Oh, Erin Burnett … The other night, the CNN host had a segment on gun control which seemed to push pretty hard on the idea that video games are the cause of school shootings — despite the fact that her guest disagreed with her. But the big problem with the clip is this: She spends the first couple of minutes of the clip talking about how much Obama’s gun control legislation might cost gun companies and how it might cost people jobs. But you could say that about new regulations in any industry! How much will more strident regulation of movies and video games cost those industries, Erin? And those products are protected by an amendment, too — the First Amendment. No matter your opinion on violent games, the way the show sets gaming up for the fall here is simply tacky. (ht Polygon)

I think video games is a bigger problem than guns.

With the recent tragedy on everyone’s minds, some people are looking for a cause and culprit other than the shooter. Unfortunately some are blaming media, including video games, for violent behavior in individuals. We know this isn’t the case; banning or regulating media content even more won’t solve the issue.
Entertainment Consumers Association president Jennifer Mercurio •  Speaking on the recent meeting between Vice President Joe Biden and executives of major video game companies, as part of Biden’s task force on curbing gun violence. The video game industry, which drew blame from NRA chief Wayne LaPierre during his controversial post-Sandy Hook press conference, has pushed back rather firmly against the notion that their products bear any responsibility to America’s gun violence epidemic. source

There’s a dude on eBay — the programmer who created bsnes, FWIW — who claims to have every Super NES cartridge for sale (at a $24,999 bounty), but I did a check and I did not see Super 3D Noah’s Ark. What the hell? I want my unspent imaginary money back. (ht Polygon)

Canabalt is on the same list as Pac-Man. It’s the most modern game on the list. Think about how awesome that is.

The sad part isn’t that he waited in line for a month to buy a video game console. (In the age of the iPhone, that’s allowed.) No, the sad part is that the man’s name is Triforce Johnson.

  • Gizmodo “While technologically, the Wii U sort of feels like the step you’d take before you get to motion controls in the Wii, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t totally fit into Nintendo’s ethos of interaction. It’s fun. It’s something your family will enjoy using. If you’re looking for a network-enabled media center, like the Xbox or Apple TV, though, definitely wait before purchasing this.*”
  • Time “The Wii U already feels like a much more robust and fascinating idea, one that shows even more promise, in my opinion, than the Wii did in 2006. That’s partly because the Wii U is still a Wii (a radically more powerful Wii with a second screen that floats around your living room, true), and motion control still factors big in the Wii U’s future. But it’s mostly because I haven’t been this impressed with a new interface since Nintendo put a joystick on a gamepad in 1996.”
  • USA Today “Whether the Wii U reaches the incredible heights of its predecessor remains to be seen. The Nintendo Wii had a clear target (casual players) and game in Wii Sports that served as a shining example of motion-based gameplay that was easy to enjoy. The Wii U needs a similar kind of experience to sell players on a world with two screens.”
  • The Verge “The Wii U is close — tantalizingly close — to being a portable console. So close, in fact, that I found myself wondering constantly why the GamePad wasn’t the console, and the TV-connected piece a peripheral.”
  • Engadget “Nintendo promised consumers a modern HD gaming console, and the Wii U — what’s there of it thus far — delivers on that promise. Games look gorgeous (HD Mario!), the risky controller is another successful control innovation and there’s a ton of promise on the horizon. What’s missing, sadly, is a huge part of the puzzle* — so huge, in fact, that it’s impossible for us to pass judgment on the whole package just yet.”

* — As the Engadget and Gizmodo reviews note, a key part of the Wii U’s play — a digital streaming package which includes Hulu, Netflix, YouTube and Amazon — wasn’t ready for them to review.
