  • $845B 2013 federal budget deficit has been predicted by the Congressional Budget Office according to a new report from the non-partisan watchdog organization. The bill will likely be held up by conservatives as concrete proof that tax hikes will not be enough to deal with the nation’s financial woes, considering the new CBO report shows the recent increase on households earning more than $450 thousand did little to slow the United States’ debt accrual. source

According to new reports, the Boy Scouts of America are currently asking for public opinions on their potential plan to abandon a long-standing policy which barred gay members/leaders from joining the organization. If you’d like to share your thoughts, call the Boy Scouts of America national headquarters (972-580-2330) or send an email to nationalsupportcenter@scouting.org (h/t to OutsideTheArk) source

  • 330k state unemployment benefit claims were filed last week according to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Labor. That’s the lowest weekly jobless claims number to be reported in five years (January 2008) and also marked the lowest four-week average for the same numbers since March 2008. source

  • 7 foreign hostages were killed following a botched helicopter attack on a militant-used vehicle on Thursday. Government forces say that 8 gunmen aligned with militant leader Mokhtar Belmokhtar were also inside of a vehicle targeted by the helicopter, all of whom are believed to have been killed as well.
  • 25 foreign hostages have escaped from their captors, though the number is heavily disputed by other media outlets from the region. In fact, Al-Jazeera claims the number couldn’t possibly be true because the network believes more than 30 hostages were killed in the helicopter attack. Regardless of debate on those free or killed, there does seem to be a consensus that AQIM forces still have 7 foreign hostages inside the complex.
  • 150 Algerian workers are believed to still be inside of the complex, though it is unknown where and under what conditions they are being held by Belmokhtar’s militants. An estimated 600 workers fled the compound when their attackers arrived on Wednesday, leaving well over a hundred workers that are unfortunately viewed as expendable in the majority of these situations. source

It is doubtless that such a technological terror in the hands of so primitive a world would be used to upset the peace and sanctity of the citizens of the Galactic Empire. Such destructive power can only be wielded to protect and defend by so enlightened a leader as Emperor Palpatine.
Governor Wilhuff Tarkin of the Outer Rim Territories • In response to the White House’s official statement on a We The People petition which urged President Obama to authorize the construction of a Death Star. A response from the “Galactic Empire” has been posted on StarWars.com, and you’ll definitely want to take a minute to check it out. Today’s been a pretty great day for parodies, don’t you think? source
